Exclusive: Gorgeous Wireframe Images of Dark Matter’s Space Station

By now, most of you have seen the premiere of Dark Matter and the consensus is fairly unanimous – you love it, as do we here at TiBS.  If you’re a regular reader, you know Erin and I have been covering the snot out of this show because we’re full of squee for a return to space-based science fiction.  Top that with the fact that Dark Matter is made by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, the writing duo whose previous machinations brought us the Stargate franchise, and I’m so excited you’ll have to scrape bits of me off the bulkhead.  Sorry about the mess.

Earlier in the week, we brought you the story behind the creation of the Dark Matter space station (Inside Look: The Evolution of a Dark Matter Space Station) complete with some beautiful concept sketches and CGI renderings.  One important, and beautiful, step in the process that has not been shown anywhere is the wireframe CGI for the final model.

Here is a Three If By Space exclusive look at the space station in its full wireframe glory.  You will not find this published anywhere else, which is kinda what “exclusive” means.  (Don’t know why I felt the need to say that.  I guess it’s because I’m so excited.)

As someone with an engineering background in computer graphics, I find the wireframe imagery to be absolutely stunning.  There’s something about it that makes it feel more real; like an actual blueprint.  It’s also much easier to appreciate the intricacy of the design and get an idea of just how detailed these models are.  VFX lead Lawren Bancroft-Wilson and his team really outdid themselves with this hyper-realistic model created from concept sketches by James C.D. Robbins, who worked as Production Designer on the Stargate franchise.

Here’s another view, but with a white background.  Personally, I like the black background better because it’s got more of an old-school blueprint feel to it and I’m old.  Though, to be honest, I find both versions pretty damned cool.

I can’t wait until we see the space station in an episode.  I’m dying to see the scale of it compared to the ship the Six Pack travels in.  And, no, I’m not forgetting Android – she’s an extension of the ship.  Besides, saying “Six Pack” sounds better than “Seven Pack” which is just awkward and weird, and “The Magnificent Seven” is already taken.  So shut up and enjoy the hell out of Dark Matter … and eat your damned vegetables, kid!
