“I bow to the wisdom of Your High Holiness, but if I might beg for just one drop of the Mother’s mercy.” ~ Cersei Lannister
Game of Thrones definitely lived up to its reputation tonight with battles and murder and a lot of slut shaming. And it happened. That scene I’ve been dreading ever since I read the books happened. But first let’s talk about the good stuff. Cersei was incest and slut-shamed, Theon got his Theon back, Sansa stood up to crazy, and Arya wiped another name off of her list. It was particularly enjoyable seeing Cersei forced to walk the streets butt-naked while people yelled cruel things and threw crap at her. At least the guards protected her from being raped, beaten, and murdered, but she still felt it. Now the only question remaining is how long will it be before the High Sparrow feels the wrath of Cersei and her brand-new, shiny, gold giant? In so many ways, Cersei deserved what she got. I hope she stays down for a bit.
While Cersei has been taken down a notch, Theon finally rose up a bit! Reek abandoned Theon’s muddled mind and in the name of protecting Sansa from the torture and mutilation Ramsay had in mind for her, he killed crazy (unfortunately that doesn’t mean Ramsay, but his bitch) and stole off into the darkness..and over a wall…with Sansa. What does that mean for Sansa and Theon? Who knows, but at least she’s gotten away from Ramsay..or has she? With the Stark luck, she’s probably just laying at the bottom of the wall with a couple of broken legs or a broken back, waiting for Ramsay to find her and begin punishing her for her insolence.
At least one Stark is working her way through her vengeance. When Arya sought out the first name on her list and destroyed that ass, I think we all cheered a bit. That scene is one of many reasons why Arya is one of my favorites. The joy, of course, only lasted until the moment when Arya almost lost Jaqen and then lost her sight instead. I suppose it could have been worse. Jaqen is still alive or at least not dead or well…I’m not entirely sure how to describe his existence, but Arya’s not dead, so that’s something. Other people, however, were not so lucky tonight.
Death ran rampant in the finale with not one, but four deaths and the possibility that Sansa and Theon also didn’t make it. Four people lost their lives and they weren’t all characters I particularly wanted to die either. First up was Stannis and his wife. Shortly before heading off to battle, Stannis’ prospects got a whole lot worse when his wife ended her life. Oh well. She let them sacrifice her daughter in the name of winning. She deserved it. Add to that Stannis’ men abandoning him and he was pretty much screwed. But he carried on, because Melisandre promised him he’d win with the king’s blood sacrifice. She, of course, didn’t stick around for the outcome when she realized it wasn’t quite working as planned. Stannis headed into battle and even though he didn’t die fighting, he died at the end of Brienne’s sword as she finally sought the revenge she’s been after ever since Stannis killed Renly. Clearly, those were the two I didn’t particularly mind dying. And in all fairness, they didn’t actually show Stannis’ death, so he may be alive yet.
Who seems to be actually and permanently dead? Myrcella and *gulp* Jon Snow. Myrcella wasn’t so bad. She was likable, but she was also still fairly new to it all, so her loss was still minor to me and, I imagine, most fans. Ellaria got her revenge for Oberyn by killing her, so there’s that, but man, that bitch sucks. The lesson here: Never and I mean NEVER let one of those Sand bitches kiss you. NEVER. Now that Myrcella’s dead, how will Cersei take that news? And Jaime? He finally got some of the fatherly attention he’s needed and BAM! Myrcella dies in his arms. What now?
And onto Jon Snow.
If you’ve read the books, then this is a scene you’ve known about for a while. It’s also a scene you may (or may not) have been dreading (I know I definitely was) and perhaps have some theories running through your head about. Either way, it happened. It wasn’t exactly the same as the book, the circumstances for his murder were a little different, but it happened. A big group of the Night’s Watch got all stab happy and stabbed Jon Snow, multiple times, “For the Watch.” The internet screamed a collective, “NOOOO” as Game of Thrones took out another one of the true favorites of the show and Stark family. As I’ve said, if you’ve read the books, you’ll know this scene, so you may have some theories about it. I know I do. I’m still hoping those theories are right, because damn it, I DO NOT WANT JON SNOW TO BE DEAD! But if the show lives up to its reputation, then farewell Jon Snow. You will be missed.
Recap in a Nutshell
Stannis fought a good fight, but lost the battle anyway. Ramsay is evil. Brienne may or may not have gotten some revenge for her Renly. Sansa nearly lost her life to crazy, but then crazy lost her life to Theon. Theon got his Theon back and immediately jumped off a really tall wall with Sansa. Arya tricked a creep. Then poked out his eyes, poked him a bunch more, and killed him. Jaqen didn’t like it. He died, but not really. Now Arya can’t see. Sam headed off to become a Maester. Jaime headed back to King’s Landing with his daughter, but he let Ellaria give her a big, fat smooch before they left. Myrcella likes that Jaime’s her dad, but Ellaria poisoned her, so now she’s dead. Drogon stole Dany and refused to take her back, so Tyrion must lead the city with Grey Worm and Varys at his side while the two men in love with Dany try to find her. Dany got stuck in a circle of prancing horses. This may not be a good thing. While back in King’s Landing, Cersei walks naked through the streets because she’s an evil sinner, but now she has a shiny, giant to seek revenge. At the wall, the Night’s Watch reenacted Caesar’s death featuring Jon Snow as Caesar. Now he’s dead. The entirety of the Game of Thrones fanbase screamed a collective, “NOOOO” and now hates the show, but will keep watching it anyway.
And that’s what you missed on Game of Thrones. That being said, enjoy your nice long wait for next season.
