After their all too close touch with death at the hands of Pope, The Burkes discuss what just happened. Ethan explains to Theresa that there are cameras and mikes everywhere. Though he doesn’t know who is behind it all. He tells her the story of how he woke up there and if they are to survive, they have to play along. Then they get a special delivery,(and it’s not Mr. McFealy from the neighborhood), to tell Ben to report to Wayward Pines Academy in the morning.
When Ethan decides to visit the police station, to gather up some weapons, he is greeted by our lovely snarky receptionist, Arlene and a welcoming party, including the Mayor. They congratulate him on his new job of Sheriff of Wayward Pines! Who saw that one coming? Kill the Sheriff, become the Sheriff! They know he is a good pick. It seems some people have access to other facts about our residents here. Now Ethan will also have that access too.
Ethan says, “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised.”
Ben gets walked to school by his mommy and the reception for him is a little strange. Mrs. F, is a little too upbeat and strange for me. Calling Theresa by her first name as if she knows her and singling Ben out for music class is a little too familiar. What the deal with this woman? The Academy itself is a little strange as all the kids look out at Ben from an upper level. They look like a bunch of Stepford kids!

Meanwhile, back at the office, Ethan searches around and finds the hidden safe in the floorboards. He opens the box to reveal files on every citizen of the Pines. He reads thru them and tries to get a grasp of what the heck this town is made of. Nurse Pam bursts into the office with Pete McCall being drug by 2 goons, demanding he be reckoned because of being a insurgent. Seems Pete is tired of the Pines and is writing subversive graffiti. Ethan isn’t having it but locks Pete up. In talking to Peter, Ethan finds he was on a business trip in 2001, and went to a hotel bar. He has been there awhile, as he stopped counting at 4 winters past. There, he met an attractive young woman and had a one night stand with her and passed out. When Pete woke up, he was still in bed with the woman, but she wasn’t young, she was older and she was NURSE PAM! Eeeegads! That one really threw me. It’s clear that Pam has something to hide and that she doesn’t like Ethan. We will have to see if she causes any trouble for him.

Theresa has time on her hands and pays a visit to Kate at the toy store. In the guise of buying something for Ben, she tells Kate that she has “hurt her family” and Kate tells her that things “have changed now”. So what will become of this little mess?
Ben meets a little girl named Amy, who is very friendly, almost weirdly friendly, and they walk home together and talk. He asks Amy about the things that are outside the wall and Amy wants to know how he found out about them. Theresa finally finds Ben and snaps because she wanted to walk him home.
Ethan tells Theresa about his day . “I guess when you kill someone, you get his job”, quipped Ethan. Then he lets her know that the school teacher Mrs. F, (and the mayor’s wife), used to be a Hypnotherapist. She has a strange way of interacting with Ben, asking weird questions about where he lives and where is home. Is she using this to change Ben? Why would they do that? Everyone is a prisoner here and they will find out more if they play along.
They decide to go and have a friendly dinner with the Fishers at the Biergarten, where they all chat uncomfortably. When the Mayor asks how Ethan likes the little town, he replies,
I just love it here, The mountains, the pines trees, the look of fear in everyone’s eyes”
The Mayor lets Ethan know that the town focuses on the children. They are very important, and they want to shape their minds. Hence the Hypnotherapist teacher. He warns Ethan to be careful. When Pam stands to give a toast to Ethan for becoming sheriff, she touts how he must prosecute and make an example of all who do not follow the rules. Ethan, lets everyone know that as long as he is there, he will search out the true criminals and bring them to justice.

Theresa and Ethan run into Dr. Jenkins on the way home. He is a curiously odd little man. He says he is checking out his latest crossbred species. Wth? We thought he was a head doctor, not a botanist. Ethan tells him he won’t go through with the reckoning of Peter McCall. Then Jenkins says,”Perhaps the best things in this world, require the biggest sacrifices”
Theresa goes home and gets a note in the mailbox to show up at the Realtors office in the morning for a job. That is a bit odd. Ethan goes to the jail to get Peter. He plans on hiding him somewhere and Peter says,”take me to the fence”. When Peter and Ethan get to the fence, Peter tells him that it has caught up to him and he doesn’t want this anymore. Peter tells him there is only one way out and he wants Ethan to give him a little push. They are watching. Ethan says he won’t do it and Peter replies,”I know, that’s why this town needs you”, and jumps into the fence to be electrocuted. Ethan returns home and tells Theresa to stay home and play along. He packs a small bag and says he is going for help. There is a strange little encounter with Pam at the office. She is jealous of his job and loves when Ethan tells her she is more suited for being sheriff. As he leaves, she sits down in the big chair and makes herself comfortable. As Ethan arrives at the borders of town, he climbs up a huge cliff face. Something is watching him…
