Nommin’ on Nori – IN SPACE! (Image by Tom Gardiner/Erin Conrad)
It was the very first day of San Diego Comic-Con International and I had yet to get my bearings. I was really looking forward to my Dark Matter cast interview at the Dark Horse Comics booth on the floor of the convention center. Thankfully, I had checked out the lay of the land the during Preview Night the day before, so I knew where I was going, but I didn’t really know what to expect. I was nervous. Here I am, about to meet most of the cast of my favorite new show, Dark Matter, and I wondered how it would turn out.
Well, I couldn’t have received a warmer welcome than was given to me by Aub Driver (@AubDriver) and Claire Gendel (@Clairetastic), the Dark Horse Comics (@DarkHorseComics) folks I’d been in contact with. They’ve always been so kind online, but this was my first time meeting either of them. I met Aub first, who could tell I was a little anxious, but his laid-back disposition immediately put me at ease. Claire was equally as comforting and accommodating and she got signed pictures for both myself and Erin Conrad (@ErinConrad2), my partner in space crime, while we waited for the cast’s autograph session to end and our interview to begin.

The cast had many quick interviews lined up, but we were the first. I’d like to think we softened up this hardened crew of the Raza for the other guys, but it turns out they’re all just big softies anyway. The welcoming attitude of Jodelle Ferland, Anthony Lemke, Roger Cross, and Melissa O’Neil immediately put us at ease. Had we not been on a schedule, we could’ve spent half the evening talking with these guys and just joking around. You can see from the interview everyone’s having a good time and not taking things too seriously.
That’s exactly what I needed on my first day of SDCC – a calm in the midst of the convention storm. Thanks to Aub, Claire, Joe Mallozzi, Jay Firestone, Vanessa Piazza, Jodelle, Anthony, Roger, Melissa, and everyone at Dark Horse Comics and Prodigy Pictures for making this the hands-down best interview experience of my life! I’m ready to do it all over again.
There will be an “again” right?
