iZombie’s Malcolm Goodwin at San Diego Comic Con:

Malcolm Goodwin is no stranger to acting.  He’s been in many shows and movies and has played a wide range of characters.  In iZombie he plays Clive Babineaux, a detective who recruits Liv for her “clairvoyant skills”.  What Clive does not know is that Liv actually gets her visions from eating the brains of the victims, nor does he know that she’s a zombie!  I had the opportunity to join in on the round table discussion at San Diego Comic Con this year and got to learn a lot about Goodwin’s take on the whole thing.

*SPOILERS* Goodwin says that Clive is a representation of “the people”, he is the every day guy and has this whole world right under his nose without any knowledge of it whatsoever.  He enjoys being able to “milk” the idea of being the average guy and one thing he said that really stood out to me is that “there is no way that (Clive) would think ‘zombies’ because of the way zombies are represented in pop-culture, they don’t talk, they don’t communicate, so that’s why he would never go there first because we would never, in life, go there first.”  Goodwin says he doesn’t believe Clive will find out that Liv is a zombie this season, and even if he does his reaction will be a “very real world reaction” like how it would be if you found out your friend/co-worker was a zombie!

Goodwin thinks this season is going to be a game changer because of what happened at the end of the last season with Major “being involved in the death of the lieutenant” (even though he didn’t kill him), but even though it may cause a strain in the relationship he has built with Liv, their friendship overall supersedes the issues they may soon face.  A question he was asked was if Goodwin believes Clive would ever sacrifice his job for his friendship, his response was “I think so, I think Clive proved that he can. For example when Liv kills a guy he goes ‘don’t worry about it. If that was your body it’d be a problem.’ So he’s letting that slide, like when Lowell was killed. He is biased.” So we shall see what happens. “He will do whatever it takes!”

During the first season Clive had an episode that made him seem like he could almost be a “dirty cop” and Goodwin said he would not have liked that outcome, though it would have been fun to play.  He says that Clive is honorable and it would have taken away his dedication to the force.  That case did show how dedicated he is and how he would go above and beyond for his partner and his job.

When asked about Comic Con he says “I love Comic-Con because it’s a celebration of art, comic, film, and fantasy. It’s infectious I think it’s a beautiful thing a collective of people coming together and you realize you’re not alone in loving these things and characters. It’s been great and it’s been an honor.”  One reporter asks if he would consider himself a nerd and his response was “I’m more of a tech guy. I build computers, websites, I’m an editor. I’m more of a technology geek, my cast-mates can tell you!”

Like the rest of the cast, Goodwin seems to be looking forward to the season and I know I sure am!  The relationship he and Liv has is fun to watch and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the events of last season will shape and change this season.
