Supergirl Creators at San Diego Comic Con

Andrew Kreisberg is well-known for his work with The Flash, Arrow, and Warehouse 13, so he is no stranger to what it means to bring a larger than life Superhero to the small screen.  His newest endeavor is Supergirl, Superman’s cousin. The strong female lead is something completely new to television, though we have seen adaptations of Wonder Woman in the past, nothing like this has come around in recent times.  What Kreisberg really wants to capture is the fact that you’re able to be a superhero and still be feminine, which is something he feels has been lost on most “kick-butt woman” characters.

He is going to bring some classic villains to the screen and is also going to pull from some of the old lore from the comics and other Supergirl adaptations.  Supergirl is going to be a standalone show, meaning it isn’t going to pull from any other the other D.C verse, and as of right now Kreisberg does not have any idea to bring the other movies into his realm.  He talks about how he just wants to capture the humanity that she has and that she will be doing things her own way and not trying to copy her cousin in any way.

Ali Adler is known for her work on “Chuck” and “The New Normal”.  She is excited to work on a project that brings such a strong lead to the screen again, citing Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Wonder Woman as two strong characters that she enjoys.  Adler states “The world is ready to see power and not care what gender” which is a statement that really resonates, because of how true it really is.  Supergirl is going to be all-inclusive, according to Adler, which means that there will not really be one specific genre that you can call the show; it will be a mixture of every genre coming together to make a super show!

One question brought up was how hard it was to do a Supergirl show without living in the shadow of Superman and Adler’s response was “when you see the glyph and the cape you think hero, and again it’s genderless” which is a great statement to make. Adler has a soft spot for comics, being a San Diego native and sneaking her brother’s Superman comics so she’s also excited to bring that passion to the project.  The show is able to draw from every part of the Supergirl story including the New 52, the Golden Age, and more. Adler also says that its fun to see the actors work together on this project and bring their passions to the screen.
