By far Syfy’s most ambitious series yet, The Expanse has been given a solid release date. The premiere will be a 2-night event spanning Monday, December 14 and Tuesday, December 15. Regular episodes of the 10-episode first season will air regularly on Tuesdays at 10/9c.
This news should bring a little extra joy to your holiday season and we should all be happy to have yet another space-based science fiction drama coming out of Syfy. For the past several years (though it’s seemed like decades), the network seemed to shy away from space, causing many fans to scratch their heads and take their displeasure to social media outlets. I was one of them. I don’t know if Syfy listened, or they just felt the time was right to go back into space, or maybe both, but whatever the reason it’s good to see the stars again.
From the press release:
THE EXPANSE BLASTS OFF WITH A TWO-NIGHT PREMIERE MONDAY, DECEMBER 14 AND TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15 AT 10PM ON SYFY
EPIC SERIES FROM ALCON TV TO REGULARLY AIR TUESDAYS AT 10PM
LOS ANGELES – August 12, 2015 – Syfy’s highly anticipated space thriller The Expanse will launch with a two-night premiereMonday, December 14 and Tuesday, December 15 at 10PM (ET/PT). The epic drama from Alcon TV is based on the international best-selling book series of the same name and will regularly air on Tuesdays at 10PM for the remainder of its 10-episode first season.
The most ambitious series in Syfy history, The Expanse is set two hundred years in the future, after mankind has colonized the solar system. A hardened detective (Thomas Jane, Hung) and a rogue ship’s captain (Steven Strait, Magic City) come together for what starts as the case of a missing young woman and evolves into a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.
Emmy® winner and Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Saddam, House of Sand and Fog) also stars as Chrisjen Avasarala, a smart and cunning politician who has risen in the ranks of Earth’s governing body without once standing for election.
Rounding out the cast are Dominique Tipper (Vampire Academy), Cas Anvar (Olympus), Wes Chatham (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay) and Florence Faivre (Alpha House, The Following). Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad), Paulo Costanzo(Royal Pains), and Jay Hernandez (Suicide Squad, Gang Related) will appear as guest stars throughout the series’ first season.
Award-winning director Terry McDonough (Breaking Bad, Suits, Better Call Saul) directed the first two episodes of the series.
Academy Award-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men, Iron Man) wrote the pilot and serve as writers as well as executive producers. Fergus and Ostby are showrunners, alongside fellow executive producer Naren Shankar (CSI, Farscape).
A thriller set hundreds of years in the future, The Expanse follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.
The series is based on the popular New York Times bestselling book series collectively known as “The Expanse,” written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey). Abraham and Franck will be show producers.
