Review: Shokugeki No Soma: Food Wars! Vol 8

By: Robert Prentice September 27, 2015
Manga Reviews Food Wars, Viz Media

5149q0RDwbLSoma Yukihira’s old man runs a small family restaurant in the less savory end of town. Aiming to one day surpass his father’s culinary prowess, Soma hones his skills day in and day out until one day, out of the blue, his father decides to enroll Soma in a classy culinary school! Can Soma really cut it in a place that prides itself on a 10 percent graduation rate? And can he convince the beautiful, domineering heiress of the school that he belongs there at all?!

The battle of the Fall Classic preliminaries comes to a thundering close! Can Soma conjure up a curry masterpiece brilliant enough to surpass a dish from the master of fragrance, Akira Hayama? Volume also includes a bonus story about the adventures of a certain someone during her lazy summer vacation.

If you have not read the manga at all yet and have only seen the anime, this is your jumping on point. The final anime episode just aired and is covered in the first 2 chapters of Volume 8. How close did Soma get to Akira’s score? Well you will just have to find out if you didn’t already watch the anime. Volume 8 continues with a few fun side stories and then the start of the Fall Classic finals where the theme picked for Soma is Bento! The real issue for Soma is his opponent, Alice Nakiri!

This volume also includes a fun side story about Erina’s summer vacation. Food Wars! has been an unexpectedly fun series that I got hooked on from the anime first. However, as it went along I couldn’t help but read the manga which is just as fun and you get actual recipes within the stories that you can cook yourself, which is a nice fun addition to the series. Be sure to also check out the anime which combines great opening and closing music titles.

Pre-Order Your Copy Today. Release Date is Oct 6th.
