Z Nation 2X04 Review: “Batch 47”

By: Courtney Sanders October 5, 2015
TV Reviews 2X04, batch 47, plant zombies, z weed, Z-Nation

We last saw Murphy running off on his own yet again as he searches for more information about Z weed. Z weed could very well be the cure for the zombie virus. We are introduced to yet another type of zombie. These zombies are connected to one plant – you cannot kill one without killing all of them.

Murphy was the star of the show in this episode of “Z Nation”. We see that he is starting to sympathize with the pain that these plant zombies are going through. Murphy is still the same asshole we have all grown to love. When the mad scientist from the end of season one finally catches up to Murphy, he is quick to make fun of the scars on the scientist’s face. Later in the episode, we find the mother of his child and Murphy would still rather leave her on the side of the road than have to deal with the possibility of fathering a zombie hybrid child. Murphy has a lot to handle. When the scientist tells him that people like him will be the only ones to survive the apocalypse, he does not joke about it. In fact, this is one of the few times he actually takes something seriously.

The zombies looked amazing in “Batch 47”. We saw zombies that looked like the Swamp Thing. I love the amount of references that are made to other horror favorites. Their hive mind was terrifying and something that even Murphy had a hard time handling.

We finally learn who the guy with the rocket launcher in episode two is. As it turns out, he is someone with a lot of power. He runs a cartel and is in charge of distributing Z weed. He does not care about finding a potential cure. He is only concerned about selling Z weed. There is a chance that Batch 47 is not the cure. However, we cannot deny the fact that it is doing something to the zombies. There was a great reference to “Return of the Living Dead”. After being given a dose of Batch 47, the zombie was aware of his surroundings enough to say the word “Brains”. This special type of weed is changing the people as well. When the scientist tested the batch on himself, he becomes part zombie.

What does this mean for “Z Nation”? Could people become like Murphy in some way after smoking enough Z weed? Furthermore, what will happen once Murphy’s son is born? Has Murphy created a new race?

Courtney Sanders

Courtney is completely obsessed with horror. She loves listening to old school suspense radio shows, watching horror movies, reading classic horror literature, and watching whatever TV show or horror anime that catches her attention. She grew up watching horror movies like Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, and Black Sabbath with her grandfather and mother. When he passed away, she dedicated her life to the very genre they loved. Her favorite films include Army of Darkness, The Devil’s Rejects, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.
Oh yeah, and her obsession with Bruce Campbell is bigger than her obsession with horror.
