‘The Expanse’ Preview Earthers Belters and Dusters Oh My

I am sure that all the Syfy fans out there have seen the first episode of The Expanse (Dulcinea) by now, and are patiently waiting for more episodes. I am willing to bet that the premiere episode has been viewed many times over by now. I have seen the first four episodes, and I am extremely hooked. Don’t worry, I won’t be giving anything away, but let’s just say that what I watched was ‘out of this world’!

The Expanse is an epic 10-part drama, set 200 years in the future after mankind has colonized space. The case of a missing young woman leads a hardened detective (Thomas Jane, Hung) and a rogue ship’s captain (Steven Strait, Magic City) across the solar system to uncover the greatest conspiracy in human history. Emmy®winner and Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Saddam, 24, House of Sand and Fog) also stars. From the writers of Children of Men and Iron Man,The Expanse is based on the hit book series.

I am probably one of the very few who has not read the book series of which this show is adapted from, and from my experience, that won’t be a bad thing. The reason I say that is because, for once, I don’t want to say ‘But that’s not what happened in the books’. I just want a break from that line of thought, at least for a while.

However, I do plan on reading the series at some point, because I am hooked. I am used to having read the source material before it becomes a TV show, so this is a nice change of pace for me. I think I am going to like not knowing what is going to happen before it happens.

I don’t think I ever truly appreciated the opening score of a TV show as much as I do now. I mean, sure I sing along to most opening credits, particularly if it’s a catchy tune, but I always thought ‘okay on to the show now please’! I don’t know what I would do if we didn’t have that opening score now, because it makes you more excited to watch.

I guess you could say it puts a viewer in the mood, and it’s particularly helpful if you are in the other room preparing some popcorn. When you hear that theme music, you know exactly how much time you have to plant your butt in the recliner, with popcorn and pop nearby! I absolutely love the opening score for The Expanse by Clinton Shorter. The visual effects are very good, and gives the viewer a sense of what the show is about.

I won’t go into too much detail in regards to the first four episodes, because I don’t want to give anything away for bookies and non-bookies alike. I found that I was really immersed into what was going on, and how everything seemed to be connected. I love a good mystery, and I love a good show that makes me use my brain. Who doesn’t like a good, old-fashioned conspiracy theory? Believe me, I had plenty of those, while watching the episodes.

As I was watching each episode, I found myself thinking ‘Oh now I think I know what happened, or how it happened’! Then, it got to the point where I was like ‘No, that’s wrong, but you might be close’. Now if I had read the book series, I would already know the answers, so I am loving that I have to keep on guessing. I would tell you all the thoughts that were going on in my head, but I might give something away, and I don’t want to do that.

I loved the fact that the world of The Expanse, mirrors the world we live in quite a bit, with the blantant prejudices towards a certain class of humans, and of course, the same political issues. There is the very real threat of a group, who want to start a war, through terrorism, and if that isn’t art imitating life, imitating art, I don’t know what is!

If we were to look at it in that way, one could wonder why they want to watch something that resembles real life so much. Well, for me that answer is quite simple, I want to see the good guys win. We usually hear about the good guys winning, but we are not able to witness it first hand, and books and television shows can bring that vision to life, in a manner of speaking.

The Expanse officially airs on Monday, December 14 with the premiere episode, and the second episode will air on Tuesday, December 15, which will be it’s regularly scheduled night. If you haven’t yet watched the premiere episode, you can do so by clicking HERE.

I will be live tweeting during the first four episodes, if you are into that sort of thing. My twitter handle, as well as others will be included in the closing of this post. The reviews of each episode will be posted either after an episode airs, or by the next day. I am looking forward to discussing the episodes with you.
