Dark Matter Digest, Jan 18: Live Dogs & Undead Chicken

By: Tom Gardiner
Dark Matter digest news season 2

Welcome to the second installment of the Dark Matter Digest, a semi-regular compendium of life on and off the set as relayed by Joseph Mallozzi through his daily blog posts. If you read last week’s post, you’ll notice I called it Dark Matter Production News while this week I’m going with Dark Matter Digest.  I’ve decided that “digest” is more accurate and succinct, but it’s also obvious I have no idea what I’m doing, so if you have any title suggestions please let me know in the comments. Either you’ll offer up something I really love, or you’ll give me something equally as bad as my own, making me feel better about my own inability to use my brain.

In case you didn’t know, Joe co-created Dark Matter with longtime writing partner Paul Mullie. Joe’s daily blog entries give a unique, almost real time look at the workings of an ongoing television series. His posts have plenty of pictures and regularly highlight the people working tirelessly off-screen, making each post feel more like a virtual set visit with friends than anything else.

Monday started the week off with some fairly undead-looking chicken, but it was all upward and onward from there. The filming of a huge action sequence took place today and nobody got hurt – in real life, anyway. There were also several nice shots of some new sets for the new season. All in all, a pretty good Monday.

Tuesday saw director Bruce McDonald and his hat continuing their directorial duties on episode 202. He can be seen fraternizing with Anthony Lemke, who is actually a lot more fun in real life than his character, Three. Joe rounded out the day with some pictures of his dogs in their stylish winter couture. You’ll have to click on the link to see the pups!

Wednesday started out in the compost heap with loads of well-past-fresh produce that gave the chicken a run for its money. I’m not sure what all the dumpster diving was about, but when we see it in the show I’m sure it’ll be interesting … and yucky. The day’s entry ended with a video of the truly creepy Hyperion-8 set, but again you’ll have to click on the link to see it.

Thursday brought with it an epic cat shirt battle among the crew, with everyone on their A-Game. Or maybe that’s C-Game? Either way, you need to click the link to see some examples of the amazing cat shirts on display. Today was also the final day of work on episode 202 and director Bruce McDonald’s goodbye, for now. He’ll be back very soon to direct episode 206.

Friday was a field trip of sorts. Some of the gang went out on a “tech survey”, which basically means they were driving around looking for locations to possibly use in future episodes. Road trips can make you hungry, and the gang stopped for schnitzel. Naturally, there are pictures which will probably make you hungry. Maybe it’s just me.

Saturday meant a trip to the farmer’s market followed by lunch and a beverage I’d never heard of, but really, really need to try. Called a bicerin and created in Turin, Italy, it’s a mix of espresso, dark chocolate, and cream. Where has this liquid heaven been all my life?!! The end of the day saw a doggie play date with Jodelle Ferlund’s pup hanging out with Joe’s four-legged family.

And that ends another week of the Dark Matter crew putting in long hours to “make the space donuts” for us. If you’re like me, you came away from Joe’s blog posts with your hunger for knowledge satiated and your hunger for food sparked. I have to stop typing now because I really need to grab a bite. Thanks, Joe!
