In this second episode, Founder’s Mutation, we are flung back even further to what The X-Files once was. It was a great episode and brought back all the “feels” even more! From the iconic music, to the same visual intro used back then, it still makes me “want to believe”! I enjoyed this episode very much!
Mulder and Scull investigate the death of Dr. Sanjay’s. it seems that Sanjay, has inserted a very long letter opener into his ear! Although it seems to be a suicide, Scully’s first thought, is that the doctor was schizophrenic. There are many small things that point to something else. Large flocks of creepy crows seem to have preceded his death and that in itself is pretty strange. The investigation leads to Dr. Augustus Goldman (also known as “The Founder”), who seems to be nothing more than a mad scientist. In science, a founder’s mutation refers to a genetic, evolutionary mutation that essentially creates a new population. It appears the Goldman has no lack of creepiness. He keeps several deformed and diseased children in neat little sealed rooms. These are all children he claims he is helping, but, and there is a big but here, he’s working for the Department of Defense. Mulder and Scully visit these children in Goldman’s secret lab, and Scully even talks to one of them. She finds that this child has no parents, no friends and has never been out of the sealed room! Some of the kids have physical mutations, such as legs the size of tree-trunks, but other have something more. One girl sends a tray of supplies flying into the air, even though she’s not close enough to touch it. Do they all have special powers?
The trail leads Scully and Mulder to a janitor, a young man, who is searching for his mutant sister. They eventually talk to his mother,(not his real mother), and Mulder is affected by the same eerie squealing, screeching noises that affected Sanjay. When they find the boys real mother, who is Dr. Goldman’s wife, they find that her first baby, the missing girl, is also affected in some way. The mother tells of finding her daughter drowning in the pool in early years. Only to find out that the little girl was actually breathing the water. When at 9 months pregnant with the second child, the boy, she attempts to leave her husband, attacking him. When her flight results in a car accident, she cuts open her womb, to let the baby boy escape!. Wow! Weird, gross and creepy, and typical X-Files fare!
This gets both Mulder and Scully thinking about their own baby, William. After realizing that their child was probably full of alien DNA, they both agreed to give him up for a closed, secret adoption. Then they could be sure he would be safe from the Government, and those who would try and use him or take him away. They have no clue where he is and wonder if he is still safe. They both have vivid daydreams, of how it would be if they hadn’t given him up. They both wanted parenthood and it really shows how they were affected in these daydreams. It almost made me cry!
When the boy finally finds his sister, she is the one that can move things, they don’t even need to speak,. They are linked telepathically. When their father, Dr. Goldman tries to stop them from reuniting, his eyes are popped out of his head and his face melts. Scully and Mulder are thrown across the hallway, and the 2 siblings escape.
This is the kind of episode that made The X-Files what it was back then! Just the right amounts of creep and gore and the excellent storyline. Who knows what will become of this revival. All I know is, that it has a great chance of being renewed for another season(extended), and then we will have a whole new generation of Philes!
