Deadpool A Fully Loaded Review

Deadpool has always been one of those characters that I’ve enjoyed, but never paid too much attention to.  I knew his story but wouldn’t consider myself an expert on him by any means. Cue my boyfriend, biggest Deadpool freak I’ve ever known, he knows all there is to know about him and has been waiting for this movie since his horrible awful appearance in Origins (bleck). The anticipation and excitement rubbed off on me so I went in to this movie with ridiculously high expectations and I am happy to report that the movie was everything I had hoped for!

The one thing I mainly wanted to see in this movie was Deadpool’s trademark 4th wall breaking, and I especially wanted to see a dig at Green Lantern (Green Lantern, specifically Kyle Rayner, is my all-time favorite superhero, so I really wanted to see them actually reference the existence of that movie, however much of let-down people say it was) and Deadpool delivered!  You could tell that the entire cast and crew wanted to get this story right. Every actor gave their all and the CG did not disappoint.  The writing was superb; with the perfect quips and inappropriate hilarity (seriously inappropriate: movie theatres everywhere are stepping up their game to combat kids sneaking in, trust me I’m an expert) this is exactly the Deadpool movie that I was hoping for.

*Minor Spoiler Alert* The story line had more meat to it than I had expected, aside from the small previews I wasn’t exactly sure how the movie was going to play out and I definitely didn’t know how Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead were going to fit in to the whole thing.  The most interesting part about it is that without the X-Men in the story, I think it would have fallen flat.  Colossus added a whole different level of comedy to the movie, he perfectly balanced Deadpool’s crazy raunchy comedy while he had his own calm and clean comedy.  I was entranced the whole time, wondering how he was going to explain to Vanessa what happened to him and especially wondering how he was going to beat Ajax considering he has a healing factor as well. The movie flew by, mainly because there was a lot going on at once, and I came out of the theatre feeling really proud of the work the entire team had done.  I mean they finally did Deadpool justice!  That’s a huge win in my book.  Also, the fact that they’re already green-lit for a sequel makes me even more excited!

A nice thing about this movie was how little main characters they had, it allowed for everyone to get their much deserved screen time and let the cast dazzle us with everything they have.  It’s no secret that Morena Baccarin is someone I admire greatly (go read my Gotham reviews if you’re interested) so seeing her opposite Ryan Reynolds was something that made me giddy.  She matched his wit and charm to a T and that made their coupling really believable, plus their on screen chemistry was very convincing!

The one major complaint that I had is how one dimensional Ajax was as a villain.  He didn’t really have much to him, they didn’t tell what his motivation was, nor exactly what he was getting out of how much of a jerk he was.  He was just there to be an antagonist and nothing more, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing considering every thing else going on in the movie.  Now, someone I was wholly impressed with was Gina Carano. I don’t really know her very well, but a good friend of mine has ranted and raved about her and how she’d be a perfect Wonder Woman. Seeing her in this role made me really sad that she wasn’t cast as WW, because he was right!  She was such an interesting villain, regardless of how small her role was.  I loved the fight scene with Colossus, the fact she could kick his ass up and down just barely breaking a sweat was awesome! She didn’t talk much, but that just makes her an even stronger actress in my book!

Overall, I really dig this movie.  I think it’s everything that Deadpool fans, and even comic fans, needed from this character.  I’m really excited to see where they take him next.  *SPOILER* I know that Cable is supposed to be in the sequel, so I wonder what they’re going to do with him.  I’m also curious to see if they’re going to continue on with Vanessa and who it is she becomes or if they’re going to bring, my personal favorite Deadpool cameo, Death onto the scene.  I guess we’ll have to wait and see! Oh, another small side note, that soundtrack is absolutely fantastic!
