Colony: Ep. 6 Review, Yoknapatawpha, or Don’t Shoot Snyder

This was a fascinating episode! Lots of hints and clues as to what’s happening – but we still have no answers, just lots of speculation. And yes, I can say Yoknapatawpha. Can you?

The first mystery is Helena, the upper-level representative, talking with – someone – on the phone following the execution of “Geronimo.” “His decision,” she says to this someone, “but as it’s his bloc – we felt it important to give him some latitude. At least the counter-insurgency he put together has been effective, especially considering the loss of the task force head.” She continues, saying that New York is put out – now we know there are people left in New York. “We let it play out. Either he gets things under control or he give us the justification we need to make a change.” So, knowing that this episode deals with an ambush of Snyder, we know that he must have p.o.’d more than just the Resistance. And he’s in danger from his own side, not just the other side.

Will and Snyder’s conversation in the car, before the ambush, is interesting. Will doesn’t believe that Snyder was right in executing Luis, and thinks that all he’s really done is anger the population. “Law and order will endure in this bloc. Trust me when I tell you that what I did gave him the most merciful end he was going to get.”  What does that say about The Factory, if anything? Not a fun place? And about the angry population, Snyder replies, “They’re alive. And still relatively free. You think I martyred him, but I believe self-interest rules the day. And when people see the consequences of participating in the Resistance, they’re going to think twice before getting involved.” Snyder, if you can trust him, and we have some ideas that you can’t, knows something about what could happen, and how bad things could get.

So Will is in the wrong place at the wrong time – or as Snyder would think, the right place. Broussard obviously took his promise to Katie seriously – I half expected him to shoot Will in the car, although what would happen to the show without its star? That gives Will the chance to rescue Snyder and help him escape – off to the Yonk, the one place Will really knows, and believes to be safe. Uh huh. When they get there, Katie, not knowing that they’re heading to the same place, is in the bar trying to hide any evidence of her participation in the ambush. Snyder is fairly perceptive, and knows he’s not popular, but he does seem to appreciate – at least for the minute – the sanctuary that the Yonk offers. “I know you don’t like me,” he says, “but this is not my fault.” And no, Katie doesn’t like him. “We’re all misunderstood,” she sneers back at him. She takes the first opportunity to contact Broussard, again getting him to promise that Will is safe, and lets him know that they’ve got Snyder holed up after the failed attack.

What did you think of the conversation between Katie and Snyder when Will  goes to call LaGarza? I’m sure that half of her brain was on “get info out of him while we have him,” but wouldn’t you want to know what he knows? Obviously, he has inside info that’s not public – so now we know that there are at least 7 Pacific Coast colonies; even Snyder doesn’t know what else is left out there; and the areas between the colonies are somewhere “you do not want to be.” And I was excited to hear Katie bring up what I’ve been thinking all along – that this is too organized and too quick to really be aliens. “We’ve all heard the conspiracy theories, this was planned for decades and our government was somehow complicit.” Note how Snyder doesn’t deny any of this? He doesn’t say, “trust me, they’re aliens.” He doesn’t say anything now – later on he tells Will that he’s seen the Visitors, and it was a “humbling experience,” but still nothing – nothing at all – about who or what they are.

And we’ve learned something about Snyder’s background – as Provost of Stanford University, he was the “perfect candidate” to manage the new colony. But Katie is still suspicious. “They came to you before the Arrival?” she asks. He hesitates – a tell? “After.” he says.

Another bit of new information I found fascinating was when Snyder was upset and worried that this was a coup. “They were all tested,” he says. He explains that everyone in the Colony was evaluated through an algorithm. “That’s how they knew who to select and what to do with them,” he says. “They got that information through the Rolodex?” Will asks. “Our  hosts know everything about us. Well, knew everything,” Snyder answers. “They had our entire data record when they arrived. We gave them the keys to the kingdom.” Makes you think about living off the grid, doesn’t it? Think about all the information about you that’s floating around – medical records, credit card and financial information, school details, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. And the people who were evaluated – and found lacking – is that why, as referenced earlier, most of law enforcement and FBI/CIA were killed? And why Will then had to change his name to keep his family safe?

But Snyder tells them, and do they really believe? That Charlie is still alive, and that he’s working to get him home. He lets them know that the paperwork and bureaucracy are overwhelming, but he’s using his influence to try to bring the boy home. And he says he was taking Will to meet Helena, who can help in this, before the ambush. Does Katie give him the benefit of the very large doubt and help to keep him alive, hoping that he really is sincere and truthful, in this at least? Or has she given up hope, and decides to work whole heartedly for the Resistance? She’s complex and interesting – as a mother, you would think you would do whatever it takes, even if it means sucking up to someone who might be able to help, to get your child back? But if you think that chance is completely gone, do you still stay silent for the sake of the rest of your family? Or do you decide that some potential sacrifices may be necessary? She’s certainly not unaware of the consequences.

Do you think Will’s got it figured out now, that Katie is at the very least a Resistance sympathizer? He certainly can’t know the extent of her involvement, but the coincidences are climbing. Her slight missteps, the little details are beginning to add up. Or is there something else going on with Katie? Quayle and Broussard have the last word in this episode. “Where are we?” Quayle asks. “In the wind,” Broussard answers. “Garage is closed. Sent everyone left into hiding.” “At least we know,” says Quayle. “The Armory, Kim’s house, today – they’re all tracks now. Katie fed us bullshit. Then she helped her husband take us apart. Look at me and tell me you don’t see it. She’s a double agent.” What do you think? Is Katie really a double agent? Or is Will too good at his job? Where do loyalties lie?
