Lucifer is flirting with danger and his possible mortality throughout this entire episode. He also continues to insert himself into Chloe’s life and has found a way to officially partner with her. Another continuing story line follows Amenadiel and his quest to get Lucifer back to hell.
“Sweet Kicks” began with Lucifer and Maze at a fashion show for one of a kind sneakers. The backdrop to the fashion show is a K-pop song, 2NE1 MTDB, Mental Breakdown. Once again great music is chosen for this show. This is where the drama begins with, of course, another dead body.
Drama and chaos continue to follow Lucifer. He’s excited to be able to experience pain, and Maze is decidedly not happy about his recklessness. She tells him “You were shot and you bled. No more sharp objects till we find out why.” His response is expected, “Quite the opposite, the danger of getting hurt is positively thrilling! Fun with mortality. Bring it!” And of course it comes. There is a shooting at the end of the fashion show, the only dead body when everything clears is a young lady named Paula who is related to a member of the Latin Kings gang. It is worrisome for sure, Lucifer is like a child and does not seem to understand the danger.
Lucifer is having a lot of fun manipulating Chloe with the fact that she shot him and is getting as much mileage as he can with her guilt. During the last episode, he met Chloe’s very ambitious boss, Lt. Olivia Monroe. He stepped up his connection with her this time by offering to help her do what she most desires, and that is to become chief of police for the LAPD. It turns out that the shooting was gang related and Lucifer knows the designer, Benny Choi. He did him a favor which got him noticed and made him and his “Sweet Kicks” famous. He calls in that favor, which he trades with the Lieutenant in order to become an official civilian consultant with Chloe. They go back to Lucifer’s place to meet with Benny Choi and his body guard, Hector. They come in with their pet pig, whose name is Pig Diddy, great name. How sad it is when he is killed, an innocent pawn in a messy gang war.
Meanwhile, Maze meets with Amenadiel who seems to be attempting to fit in with the humans. It’s funny to watch all the little mistakes he makes while trying to fit in. First of all it’s the suit. He’s got a three piece suit just like Lucifer, like the little brother trying to copy his big brother. The problem is, he wears the suit jacket with the collar turned up, it’s just wrong. Amenadiel is still looking for Lucifer’s weak spot, and it’s worrisome, because he is getting closer to figuring it out, and I don’t see it going well. Maze tells him about Dr. Linda, so Amenadiel poses as a doctor in the office next door and tells her he has a few patients who are troubling, and wonders if she has any that she would like to talk with him about. Well, we know she does, Lucifer is definitely an issue for her! His comment here is another great example of how he is not quite fitting in with humans. “Good, it’s settled then, you share with me, I share with you — fluid exchange.” It takes Dr. Linda a couple beats before she understands his meaning.
Lucifer has a moment with Maze at the club, he’s at the piano with his booze and his cigarettes. He’s so smooth and suave. She is very worried about the risks he’s taking and his vulnerability so she threatens to stop watching his back. Lucifer is always so humorous and silly that when he gets intense it’s very noticeable and disturbing. After Maze threatens him, his look changes just enough that you know you’d better pay close attention. He reminds her that she exists to protect Lucifer and to know where he is and who he is with at all times. She does not appreciate these comments at all.
Things come to a head with the gangs when the fact that Benny’s biggest competition has just been released from jail. He went to jail while Benny went free for the same offense so everyone suspects that Yellow Viper is behind the shooting. Chloe and Lucifer find Yellow Viper at a community center teaching street art to kids. While they are there the Latin Kings arrive and threaten to kill them all. Yellow Viper stood in front of all the kids shielding them from the guns. Lucifer puts himself in more danger by distracting the gun wielding Latinos while Yellow Viper sneaks the kids out. Can a man who cares for kids and teaches kids be a cold blooded murderer?Lucifer once again shows a caring compassionate side. It is clear that Chloe and Lucifer are in grave danger when suddenly the lights go out. Chloe pushes Lucifer out of the way of danger and a shadowy figure begins beating the entire Latin Kings gang to bits. Maze has come to the rescue like a badass ninja.
Once she’s done, she looks at Lucifer and tells him, “Ass saved, you’re welcome!” I believe she made her point, we’ll see if Lucifer understands how vulnerable he is yet. Chloe once again pays attention to her gut feeling, knowing that something isn’t quite right in this situation. Yellow Viper is handcuffed and in the back of her LAPD vehicle. He points out to Lucifer and Chloe that he only wants to do his art and asks why would he go after Benny and miss? It doesn’t add up. After a bit of talking they realize that the shooter had to be really bad to miss everyone, or an exceptionally good shot. Hector, Benny’s bodyguard was a marine. He has a tattoo of a heart and crosshairs. It means he was in an elite sniper unit and is one of the best marksmen in the world. He did the shooting for Benny so that they could frame Yellow Viper and put him back in jail, thus removing his competition.
Hector and Benny are arrested, and there is peace between the gangs. The lieutenant gives a press conference discussing her accomplishments.
Back at Lux, Lucifer and Maze talk and he seems to be slowly understanding the risk he is under. Maze is jealous of Chloe, and Amenadiel needs Lucifer back in hell. They are a dangerous combination.
The episode ends showing that Chloe has fallen asleep on a chair in her house. Maze appears and malevolently watches her sleep. The angle changes to a mirror that is near where Chloe is sitting asleep, and we see Maze’s reflection in the mirror, except it’s hideous. We know what Lucifer looks like in his true devil form, now we know how terrible looking Maze really is. Lesley-Ann Brandt is very beautiful, her alter ego is gruesome.
I missed seeing Trixie in this episode. She is so refreshing and her interactions with Lucifer are always very entertaining.
What trouble will Lucifer find next week? I wonder if he and Chloe will ever get together, that is always a dilemma. I am a romantic, so I want to see them together, but then will the dynamic change between them?
