Shadowhunters 106 Review ‘Of Men and Angels’: Mysteries Unfold

Well! Those preview scenes suggested that there was going to be some drama in ‘Shadowhunters, Of Men and Angels’, and, boy, was there!

In case you missed the episode, here’s a link to the (written) official recap of Episode 6  Warning: contains lots of spoilers! You could also view the episode at Freeform (in the USA) and on Netflix (check your country).

The humour sprinkled throughout this episode is a nice counterpoint to the tension of the unfolding drama. Actually, dramas, plural. Clary doesn’t seem to mind Magnus’ teasing her about her “suitors” and “boy toys” at all.

I’m intrigued with Simon’s story. It’s obvious to us what’s happening, and I think Simon got a pretty clear hint this episode, although I’m sure that he already suspected. Alec and Jace have both noticed changes in Simon too: his strength in opening the door to Clary’s apartment, and his aggression/loss of control in his argument with Jace. After seeing Jace and Clary have a moment, it looks like Simon has accepted Jace’s comment that he “is a third wheel”, and gone off to get out of the way. I do feel sorry for him. I wonder what will happen next time we see Simon? I wonder what the Shadowhunters’ reactions will be when they know for sure?

Meanwhile, we know that Alec is to be married off, but we don’t yet know who to. Izzy probably inadvertently helped save Luke’s life by telling Alec about it. It made Alec angry enough to stop caring about “rules”, and go to help Magnus. It also meant that Simon lost his bet about Alec leaving Jace (and Clary and Luke) hanging.

#MalecFirstDate happened! It was probably not the way either of them would have preferred it, but, at least it happened. I’m kind of relieved that “virgin Shadowhunter energy” isn’t really a thing – that was a bit weird. I wonder if Jace even believed it? As Alec said: Jace and Clary were right there. Magnus and Alec seem to have a great connection, and Alec obviously does care about Magnus. Aren’t they adorable! I wonder where this storyline is going to go? (I have some other speculations of my own…)

Speaking of the Lightwoods: little Max is so cute! He’s a bit mischevious, and started a fire at school & lied about it, but he’s just a little kid, right? Izzy affectionately calls him “a little demon”. Remembering that Izzy is quite comfortable with Seelies, who are half-demon, makes this less weird, since Shadowhunters exist to kill demons. I wonder why little Max is so blonde and blue-eyed, though, when the rest of the family are so dark? I really think there’s more to Max’s story.

Luke’s communication with Jocelyn in her self-induced coma shows his love for her, as does the story that unfolds as he and Magnus explain to Clary about the events before she was born. We also learned that Clary had a brother, killed by Valentine. (Book readers and movie-watchers know more about this already.)

Watching young Luke, Jocelyn and Valentine explains a lot. Thank goodness Luke became a Werewolf, instead of dying. Thank goodness Magnus was able to save him this time, too!

We also learned this episode that The Mortal Cup was not supposed to be used, after the first Shadowhunters were created. We already know Valentine’s intentions to use it to create his own army and kill everyone with some demon blood. Interestingly, because of Valentine’s experiments on himself, which sent him mad, he should actually include himself in the list of those to be killed!

As Jocelyn said, Clary hearing all of the story did “unlock her”, and now she has a new ability, and knows where “The Mortal Cup” is. I don’t think she knows yet, how to retrieve it properly, but just keeping it away from Valentine is the most important thing, right now!

Next, they need to retrieve the cup.

Cute Lightwood Family photos. See what I mean about Max?
