Lucifer is lonely and needs a friend, but he doesn’t know what a friend is. Can the devil make friends with a priest? Is Chloe his friend? Lucifer needs help understanding his daddy issues; the priest is in a unique position to help Lucifer understand his father. Lucifer is also in danger; Amenadiel is determined to get him back to hell and now knows he can do it by killing him.
Daddy issues
During Lucifer’s interactions with the priest, Lucifer ends up speaking and thinking about “dear old dad” quite a bit. The priest (Father Franck), has come to Lucifer as a last ditch effort to save a boy he cares about from sinking down into the drug world. Lucifer suggests he ask his boss for help. The priest says “I believe He lead me to you”. This does not make Lucifer happy and he bitterly tells Father Franck that he will not help him.
He decides to get involved to prove that those who speak on His behalf are not as virtuous as they pretend to be by looking for evil in the priest. Chloe and Lucifer go to the church to speak with the priest. They leave the church with the priest to go in for questioning about the murder. As they are leaving there’s a drive by shooting. Chloe decides that the priest is not safe where he is. Lucifer takes Father Franck back to Lux. Who would expect a priest to be at a night club? Lucifer pulls out all the stops to tempt the priest, but to Lucifer’s dismay, it doesn’t work. While he is there, they speak about the priest’s background. He used to be a musician and was in a band with Connor’s father who played the drums. They were killed in a car accident where he was in the car too. Connor‘s parents died as did Father Franck’s daughter. Lucifer is upset that his father would allow a child to die. He doesn’t understand why Father Franck would turn to the church.
Later, they are talking about their music and Father Franck throws down with Lucifer telling him that he’s probably a better piano player. This leads to one of the best scenes of the episode, a wonderful duet with the priest and Lucifer on the piano.
During this time, they have a few conversations about God. Father Franck believes that God “has faith in all of us”. Lucifer is amazed that the priest really believes this, when he asks why, Lucifer’s response is “because he didn’t have faith in me”, another peek into Lucifer’s issues with his father.
Towards the end of the episode, the priest ends up getting shot in the chest when he puts himself in the way of a bullet meant for Connor. Lucifer gets very upset that Father Franck is dying. He has a lot of intense emotions that are confusing to him. They are confusing to me too; it was surprising to see him take the priest’s death so hard. As Father Franck is dying, Lucifer says that he does not understand why God put him in the path of the priest. Father Franck believes that it’s the other way around. Lucifer’s response is that “he gave up on me a long time ago”. The priest’s last words are, “Remember, your father has a plan”. Lucifer seems to be in shock after all of this.
He is later seen on the balcony of his penthouse yelling at God that the priest was doing exactly what He wanted him to do, but it still isn’t good enough. “What does it take to please you”? Lucifer clearly is desperate for his father’s approval, since he hasn’t gotten it, he’s been rebelling.
Lonely and needing a friend
Lucifer and the priest connected in a very real way. Their conversations and later their piano playing brought them closer together. If Lucifer had more time with Father Franck I believe they would have become friends and confidants. This of course is completely opposite from what is expected from the devil. Lucifer is traumatized by the priest’s death. Death is not something that should upset the devil. He also discovers that Chloe is a good friend. Lucifer is mourning Father Franck’s death while playing the piano. Chloe comes in and surprises Lucifer. “Thought you could use a friend.” Lucifer would like to play the piano with this friend too. It turns out that Chloe only knows one song, and its chopsticks. Lucifer and Chloe have my second favorite scene of this episode by playing the piano together. This is a very sweet moment.
Amenadiel/Malcolm/Dan/Chloe
The other dramas that are happening around Lucifer’s issues continue developing and growing. Malcolm has arranged to be Dan’s partner so that he can keep an eye on Dan. He has a job that he needs Dan to do for him; it is for Dan to get an untraceable gun from evidence.
In the meantime, Chloe is trying to understand whether she wants a reconciliation with Dan. That kiss last week is definitely messing with her head.
Malcolm keeps having creepy run-ins with Amenadiel. Amenadiel brought him back to life after he spent 30 seconds in hell. Those 30 seconds were terrifying and Malcolm will do anything to avoid going back. Amenadiel wants him to kill Lucifer, thus the untraceable gun he made Dan get for him. I knew Amenadiel was plotting something bad and that his bringing Malcolm back was going to play into the whole thing.
