First things first. We have been patiently waiting for season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead, to begin. The first episode, Monster, was highly anticipated and hyped before hand, by AMC. The companion series to The Walking Dead, shot off the charts last year with it’s 6 episode season. Set in a slightly different time period as the original Dead series, and in a completely different, geographical place. We met an highly dysfunctional family, and saw the world collapse around them from the start of the zombie virus. At the end of season one, we were left wondering if they would escape the chaos. Well, this season we will see just how they do it!
‘Monster’, is episode 1 of the new season of Fear. It started out, right where it left us hanging in season 1. There have probably only been a few hours time lapse between the last scene. We find out group, consisting of Madison, Alicia, Travis and the boys, Chris and Nick attempting to get to the safety of Strand’s yacht, Abigail. Along with the main survivors are what is left of the Salazar family, Daniel and Ofelia. We open at night, fires burning all around and our group is using a motorized raft, to get out to the yacht. Madison, Travis and his son Chris, along with the dead body of Chris’ mom ,Liza are waiting for Nick to get the raft back so they can get off the beach.
The infected, seem to pop up from nowhere and start surrounding them. As they look up, Strand’s house is now burning from the constant bombing of the Air Force jets, trying to stem the flow of the virus. The infected try and attack our group, but they manage to fight them off, as Nick pulls up to the beach. One infected, almost gets Madison, and tries to get on the raft as quick thinking Nick, raises the boat motor up to catch it in the face! Eww! They race towards the Abigail, with Liza’s corpse in tow, and to safety. Safety. Is there anyplace that these people can be safe? Is being out on a yacht, on the ocean, really going to save them? I think not!
When morning comes, they are confronted by a large group of survivors, overloading another boat. Maddie pleads with Strand to stop and help them, maybe bring them aboard, but Strand isn’t having it. She pleads for him to stop the boat, but he replies, “If I stop the boat, it’ll be to drop folks off, not take them on.” Travis understands the dangers I think, and it puts him at odds with Madison. In the background, the voice of the Coast Guard on the radio, tells them there is no help, from land, sea or air.
Strand decides to head for San Diego, towards the Navy at Coronado, but Travis tries to reason with him about the other floating survivors. Alicia can’t believe they are not going to help them and Travis puts her to use, listening to the radio for any news. She hears chaos all around on the ham radio and finally hears music playing and the voice of a young man. He keeps asking for someone to talk to and she finally gives in and answers,”I’m here.” What a freaking mistake this will be!
Chris is really taking the death of his mother very hard. All he does is sit by her body. When he does come out, he and Daniel have a chat and fish off the boat. Daniel understands what Chris is going through, after the lose of his wife. They exchange sympathies. They catch a large eel to eat.
Alicia and her new found radio friend, have been talking. What little things she is telling him are not good. He is using her to find there coordinates. She tells him they are on a big yacht and that they have water desalinization equipment. Not cool Alicia! You are saying way to much in this world!
All of these characters are still learning the ropes in this new world of chaos. They are still finding out, what makes one another tick. This episode is storyline developing, and character building. Too many fans are complaining that it is going to slow, it’s boring, or not enough excitement. Even other entertainment site,s are poo pooing the show! Please people, give it a chance. This is NOT The Walking Dead! It is NOT meant to be. It’s a different time and place, with different characters!
Maddie hears music playing and in the background, Strand is talking to someone. Who is it? He tells her he was talking to himself, but she is suspicious. Later , she and Daniel agree that he must be watched. They are both thinking that something is not right.
They finally decide to bury Liza at see and they prepare her body. Travis speaks some nice words over her body. Chris listens silently and then rushes up and dumps her corpse into the sea. Chris is really angry at his father for killing his mom. I think he knows that it had to be done, but still harbors some hatred there. He hits his father in the argument.
Alicia’s radio friend Jack, has told her that they are talking on water. His boat is sinking and he needs help. Strand isn’t buying it. He is angry that Alicia told him too much about his boat and where they are. Everyone is tired and tensions are running high. When at last, they cook the eel and sit down to have dinner, they hear a splash off the back of the boat. Nick runs to see what it is and finds Chris, in the water, swimming away. When Nick jumps in, Chris said he just wanted to swim. Everybody is on deck, and they are all worried.
They are drifting close to some smoke on the water and Nick has dived down below and sees an infected person floating. They can’t swim, but are still dangerous. When he thinks he hears someone, he discovers a wreck hidden by the smoke. he swims over and up inside the wrecked hull to investigate. There is carnage everywhere, and it appears the boat has been shot to hell. He finds the log book in a plastic bag, and another infected floater. This floater was weird in the sense that Nick just stared at it, and it didn’t try to eat him. He leaves the boat wreck.
At the same time, the alarms are going off in the wheel house. Strand is freaking out. There is a boat and it is approaching fast! He is pretty sure it’s whoever took out the other boat and people. Travis has reached Chris and Nick, and they all get back in the raft. Alicia’s radios her buddy, Jack. She tells him they can’t come help him, it is too dangerous. Jack says, “It’s ok Alicia, we’ll see you soon”! Is that the present danger? Did she give away their position? Can you say Pirates!!!
