First things first! Congratulations to Lucifer and all the supportive fans, the show has been renewed for a second season!!
We had to wait two weeks for this episode, it was worth the wait. You know that the show will be an interesting one when it begins with Lucifer telling Chloe two things. First, “I’m pretty sure we made Rosemary’s baby last night.” Second, “You snore like an Albanian field wench.”
Lucifer is trying to understand the “rush” he felt after doing something good without expecting something in return by so nobly turning Chloe down, when he could have easily had sex with her while she was drunk. The idea of a bad boy turned good confuses and intrigues Lucifer. He wants to do more good to repeat the rush he felt after admitting he didn’t have sex with Chloe. The problem is that he doesn’t know how to just be good, what happened with Chloe was unplanned and unexpected.
Throughout the episode Lucifer tries to be selfless and “do good”, the problem is that he is only doing this to feel that rush again. These situations are as funny and incongruous as we would expect them to be with Lucifer involved.
The murder that is being investigated this time is the shooting of a former NBA star named Tim Dunlear. He had been a playboy, and into drugs and gambling. When he stopped playing he cleaned up his act and dedicated himself to philanthropy. This is when Lucifer decides that he too can benefit from being a bad boy with a heart of gold. He wants someone to tell him if Dunlear ever got a “philanthropic high”.
His first attempt at philanthropy is to offer Lux to Dunlear’s widow (Vanessa) for a fundraising gala that had already been planned. Later he is talking with a homeless man and decides to help him by literally giving him the shirt off his back, then his pants and his jacket, leaving him standing there stark naked. I don’t think anyone will complain about getting to see so much of Tom Ellis’s buff body!
After each of Lucifer’s absurd attempts at doing something good he is confused by the fact that he doesn’t feel the rush he felt when he didn’t sleep with Chloe. When he talks with Dr. Linda about his experiences, she tells him that true good needs to come from a place of selflessness, a piece of wisdom that goes right over his head.
Tim Dunlear had been planning to build a school in Haiti. He sent a photo to his assistant (Kyle) right before his murder. When Kyle shows it to Chloe and Lucifer, she knows that it is an important clue to why he was killed. She runs into roadblocks put up by the foundation’s lawyer at every turn. Resourceful as ever, she convinces Kyle to help her go through Tim’s records to understand what might have happened. During this process she learns a few things. The biggest revelation was that Tim was gay and he and Kyle were in love. Chloe learns too that the school was never built, thus explaining the reason for the picture he sent to Kyle. It showed the location of the school but there was nothing there. She suspects Vanessa of embezzling the money and convinces the foundation’s lawyer to help her find the proof. They plan to confront Vanessa at the gala.
Meanwhile, Malcolm is planning to frame Dan as Lucifer’s killer. After choking Dan until he passed out in the last episode, he is now tying him up to a pole in a creepy basement. Dan is left trapped but needing to escape to warn Lucifer of Malcolm’s plan. He is finally able to escape the zip ties and hurries to stop Lucifer’s murder.
While Lucifer finishes getting ready for the gala, Malcolm barges into his penthouse. I find it amazing that anyone can just take the elevator up to Lucifer’s place without a key or special permission, don’t high-end places like this have more security? He tells Lucifer that Amenadiel brought him back from hell with the requirement of killing him. Lucifer reminds him that he may be out of hell for now, but he will end up in hell when he eventually dies, the angel cannot keep him out of hell indefinitely. Malcolm is frightened and horrified. Lucifer offers him a different deal. He shows him his coin. He tells him that it is a Pentecostal coin, and it is like a subway token for the damned. He had been planning on using it to get back to hell but tells him that it can be used to get out of hell too and that he can have it if he doesn’t kill him. Malcolm predictably takes the coin. I thought that Lucifer looked a bit lost without it. What is he going to do during quiet times when he usually plays with it? It seems to me that it is a bit of a comfort to him. He now doesn’t have his wings or his coin, does he have any other connections to hell?
After Malcolm leaves, Lucifer gets another visitor. He is sitting on his couch with a drink and Vanessa walks in telling him that they can’t start the party without him. While they talk, she tells him that she is leaving the morning to a ranch she owns in Buenos Aires. Lucifer’s response is wonderful. “Back in the day, I knew some folks who moved to Argentina.” Turns out it was the Nazi’s, leading him to a light-bulb moment realizing that she killed her husband and he tells her so. After he escapes being shot by Malcolm, Lucifer has the miserable luck of being shot by Vanessa. I was pretty sure Lucifer wouldn’t have died, but this moment sure freaked me out!
This is when Dan rushes in. He sees Lucifer lying dead on the ground. I was holding my breath waiting to see what would happen, when lo and behold, Lucifer takes a deep breath and sits up. Dan is surprised and so is Lucifer. Lucifer sets his surprise aside and heads down to the gala to confront Vanessa. Imagine her surprise when Lucifer appears beside her! Chloe shows up with proof of the embezzlement and Lucifer gets Vanessa to confess to killing her husband. While Chloe takes her away in handcuffs, she looks at him and thanks him for his help. He gets the “rush” again, and is amazed!
Maze and Amenadiel have an interesting moment together. They are like kids saying “I know you are but what am I”, taunting and annoying each other. Amenadiel is sitting alone at a restaurant when Maze arrives and sits down a cross from him uninvited. He is angry with him telling him that he ruined her life and calls him boring. He tells her that he actually isn’t boring. I think that if one isn’t boring one shouldn’t have to explain it. She tells him that her definition of excitement is fun, danger, sex and spontaneity, and he isn’t any of those. He tells her that he is too exciting, and she asks for an example. He tells her that the idea of the devil being compared to a goat was his idea. She is suddenly amused and they seem to switch from antagonistic to decidedly friendly. A bit later we see a car with all its windows fogged up and it is rocking rhythmically. I wasn’t sure exactly who was in the car at first, but when the camera scanned to the back window, I understood what was going on. It appears that when angels have sex they culminate with their wings abruptly spreading, this time it cracked the back window.
Maze appears at Lux looking disheveled. Lucifer looks at her and says something to her about her bed head. She tells him that she was with his brother and gives him the impression that she will get information for Lucifer about Amenadiel’s plans. He tells her that Amenadiel tried to kill him by hiring a hit-man. She looks at him in shock and horror wondering why he survived being shot. This is a very important question.
Why is Lucifer sometimes mortal and sometimes immortal?
Lucifer seems to have a theory and goes to Chloe to test it, taking a knife with him. Chloe tells him that she can let her guard down when she’s with him and not with anyone else, he makes her vulnerable. He realizes that she makes him vulnerable too. To test it, he slices his hand behind his back and it bleeds.
Such an interesting turn of events. I like that they affect each other in the same way. So Lucifer is mortal only when he’s with Chloe. There is a very special connection between these two.
