Before I post my thoughts on this episode entitled Ruby Slippers, I want to say out front that any comments I make about the relationship between Dorothy and Red are not because I am against the LGBT movement, my comments will be as it relates to the show only. I really don’t like that I have to make that disclaimer right off the bat, and the only reason I am doing so is because I know that this is a hot topic for many out there, and it can get heated.
I really did not like this episode at all, and it is mainly because I did not see any movement towards defeating Hades. NADA! ZIPPO! ZILCH! Once again, we fans get another “filler” episode, and one that was full of fluff. Normally, I don’t discuss any portion of the episode on Facebook with fellow fans on Facebook, but I noticed some fans were not happy with the homosexual story-line we saw last night. There were a few that did not care for it altogether, and others were upset that the female on female pairing was not between Mulan and Red.
I have to admit that I thought this pairing was where the writers were headed, but I was not shocked when it did not happen. I figured that they wanted to throw fans for a loop, and they accomplished that well. I am glad that the majority of the fans were only disappointed that the pairing was not Mulan and Red. It shows how far we have come in the way we think. This was something good that came from this episode.
I have no problem with gay characters on television, because it needs to be done more, but the story made no sense in relation to the main story-line on this show. I would feel differently if their sexual orientation was a part of the main story, but it was not. We have been hearing for three seasons that the show would feature a gay couple, and we all saw that played out last night. Guess what? It played out flat, boring and useless to the main story-line, because their sexual orientation had no effect on it whatsoever.
I know that the writers play around with the fairy tales and their characters, sometimes it works, and other times it doesn’t. In the case of Red and Dorothy, it did not work because it did not mesh well with the main story-line. That is the ONLY reason that I did not like the pairing, it felt rushed and not sincere, and again it was not central to the main plot. It could have been even more beautiful had it not been rushed. The only thing this romance between Red and Dorothy accomplished was to introduce us (once again) to the Sleeping Curse, and to remind us that True Love’s Kiss is the only way to save someone you love.
I know it is a show about fairy tales, and so those tropes will always come back into play, but it feels way too repetitive for my liking. Zelena puts Dorothy under the Sleeping Curse, in comes True Loves kiss, Belle puts herself under the Sleeping Curse, and she will need True Love’s Kiss as well. We even heard the well used line of “I’ll always find you”! I love Snow and Charming saying it, because it is their thing, and it was okay when Emma said it, but now it is just overkill. Are you bored yet? I got bored just typing it!

I am really starting to dislike “filler” episodes, and especially on this show. I would have preferred that more time was spent on figuring out a way to defeat Hades on all fronts, rather than focus on a relationship between two characters that we fans will most likely never see again. I really don’t think that Dorothy will want to leave OZ, and Ruby will probably stay with her so what was the point of it all? It’s not fair to start fans on something that they night not see again for quite some time.
I never once thought that I would NOT like an episode of Once Upon A Time, but I guess there really is a first time for everything. I really just want them to get down to business, and figure out a way to defeat Hades, and get the hell out of Underbrooke, with their lives and souls intact. I am ready to see if Emma splits her heart with Hook, or if something will happen to temporarily stop it.
Despite not liking this episode, I still love the show and I hope we get back to the main story of this second half of the season soon! What did you think of the episode? Sound off below!
