Praise the Witness and pass the Splinter Juice!. Syfy has renewed the hit time-travel series for a 3rd season. That’s not good news, that’s great news for fans. You see that face up there? See that big, banana-eating grin Jennifer Goines has on her face? Yeah, I’ve got one just like that right here, along with millions of other fans of excellent television, gripping storytelling, and impeccable acting.
If you’re on the internet right now (and let’s face it, if you’re reading this without the internet you must be standing behind me while I write it … you creep!) you’ll see Twitter blowing the hell up with the news. It’s practically splintering across all time zones and causing chaos of the best kind – celebratory chaos.
12 Monkeys is one of the best shows on television. Notice I didn’t say one of the best “science fiction” shows or use any other qualifier. That’s because when held up against ANY television show, 12 Monkeys shines, and usually surpasses anything it’s compared to. And I’m a geek, and we geeks are notorious for finding fault in every-damned-thing, especially the things we love. But in the case of this show, there’s practically nothing to dislike.
Credit goes to Terry Matalas and Travais Fickett for writing a complex and compelling tale that twists time, yet somehow manages to make sense of it all. 12 Monkeys is the smartest time travel story I’ve ever experienced. And I’ve been a mega-fan of time travel stories for the entire literate portion of my 56 years on this ball of dirt we call home. If Herbert George Wells were alive today, he’d shake their hands for doing such a fine job.
The actors on the show also deserve all the accolades in the world for bringing that story to life. Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull, Emily Hampshire, Kirk Acevedo, Barbara Sukowa, Todd Stashwick, Demore Barnes, Andrew Gillies, Alisen Down, Tom Noonan, and literally everyone right down to the extras embody their roles so perfectly they obliterate the line between reality and fiction.
12 Monkeys is a perfect symphony of talent on all sides of the camera and I cannot thank Syfy enough for giving it another year to entertain, amaze, and excite us all.
