Binge Worthy: Best Anime 2016 Spring Season

By: Robert Prentice
anime Crunchyroll Funimation

As the spring anime season comes to a close, it’s time to binge watch some of the best series of the season. Our top picks for binge worthy anime cover a wide range of genre. Have one we didn’t include in our list? Let us know in the comments below, we are always looking for good anime.

Ajin: Demi-Human (Netflix)

The story is about a student named Kei Nagai (永井 圭 Nagai Kei), who discovers he is an immortal “Ajin” when he is hit by a truck. He becomes a wanted person because the Ajin are considered dangerous inhuman beings and the only person who is there to support him is his childhood friend, Kaito. While the government claims to help Ajin live in a safe environment, they are actually using them as subjects for cruel and inhumane experimentation. As a result, Ajin that have escaped are bent on revenge with the exception of Kei.

The series is a mix of Deadman Wonderland and Tokyo Ghoul, the torture scenes are not for the weak of heart. The english dub through Netflix has many A-List voice talent including Johnny Yong Bosch, Bryce Papenbrook, and Todd Haberkorn. But the series itself is worth binge watching. The animation isn’t anything special, but the plot and the characters are great. Plus a second season of the anime has already been announced for this fall.

My Hero Academia (Funimation)

Izuku has dreamt of being a hero all his life—a lofty goal for anyone, but especially challenging for a kid with no superpowers. That’s right, in a world where 80% of the population has some kind of superpowered “quirk,” Izuku was unlucky enough to be born completely normal. But that’s not going to stop him from enrolling in one of the world’s most prestigious hero academies. Now, the only thing standing between him and his first class is the academy’s formidable entrance exam—nothing a little private tutoring from the world’s mightiest hero can’t solve.

Many have compared it as the new generations Naruto or One Piece but I don’t think its either of those, and for an anime and manga like this, thats a good thing. If you don’t know what this show is about, check out the preview video above. So far the season has had no fillers. Plus the story, animation and characters are all incredible. This is a must watch anime.

Twin Star Exorcists (Crunchyroll)

Grotesque monsters known as Impurities reside in Magano, a realm parallel to the present day. Exorcists purify these evil apparitions to protect the people. Rokuro Enmado is opposed to becoming an exorcist, even though he has the talent to be one, but an oracle gives him the title of “Twin Star Exorcist,” the name bestowed upon married exorcists. Benio Adashino, the girl who receives the title along with Rokuro, is determined to exorcise all the Kegare, or Impurities, in the world. The two find themselves wrapped up in more and more battles together as the Twin Star Exorcists.

This series has some great animation and a sense of humor mixed into the dark story line which involves some heavy subjects. Not as dark as Ajin is but getting closer as we push into later half of the season.

Bungo Stray Dogs (Crunchyroll)

Kicked out of his orphanage and on the verge of starving to death, Nakajima Atsushi meets some strange men. One of them, Dazai Osamu, is a suicidal man attempting to drown himself in broad daylight. The other, bespectacled Kunikida Doppo, nervously stands by flipping through a notepad. Both are members of the “Armed Detective Agency” said to solve incidents that even the military and police won’t touch. Atsushi ends up accompanying them on a mission to eliminate a man-eating tiger that’s been terrorizing the population.

You could call it a mafia driven detective anime or a police procedural with a super-natural twist. Either way, its a fun series that has eccentric characters and super-natural powers/abilities. As we learn more of the back story of Dazai we know there is a lot more under the surface. This series also has a great sense of humor to it.

Kiznaiver (Crunchyroll)

The story takes place in Sugomori, a city built upon reclaimed land that once prospered as a futuristic city. One high school boy living there, Agata Katsuhira, is somehow unable to feel any pain. One day just before the start of summer break, Katsuhira is called by a mysterious girl named Sonozaki Noriko and chosen to become one of a group of people who share one another’s pain: a “Kiznaiver.” Several of his classmates have also been chosen as part of this group, but they’re all people from different circles who normally wouldn’t associate with each other.

If you like anime that get super emotional this is for you. The story starts out a bit slow and confusing. However as it ramps up it gets very deep and very emotional fast. The most recent two episodes had me a bit of a mess, and I am not ashamed to admit it.

So what anime did we miss? What makes your top list? If there was infinite time in the week we would watch even more anime. We are sure there are a few series that missed our top list but made yours.
