I’m willing to admit that I’m a geek. A nerd. A fan. And as such, I have lots of little things related to the objects of my affection, things beyond the practical and regular. Things like signed pictures, toys, and, yes, trading cards. Right now, I only have a couple of cards, but I think that this fall, I will seriously drop into the card collector’s world, as Season 1 Outlander cards are released.
We’ve been hearing about these for a while – I wrote about them when Cryptozoic, one of the biggest fandom trading card publishers, was announced as an official licensee. And it’s been a LONG time coming, but they’re finally getting close enough so that we can think about how and where we’re going to put these things!
So what’s special about Outlander trading cards that you can’t get by printing pictures off the interwebs? Autographs: Grant O’Rourke, Lotte Verbeek, Aislin McGuckin (Letitia), Lochlann O’Mearain (Horrocks), Tobias Menzies (Frank and BJR cards), Graham McTavish, Simon Callow, James Fleet (Rev. Wakefield), Annette Badland, Gary Lewis, Steven Cree, and Sam Heughan have all sent in personally autographed cards, and those are only about half of the show’s stars that have contracted to sign! (Cryptozoic won’t release other names until either the cards are returned or the stars themselves have released a photo or notice that they’ve signed, so we don’t know who else is coming.)
Wardrobe: There will be several special cards that include an actual piece of wardrobe that someone wore (yes! you may end up with a 1″ square of something that TOUCHED SAM HEUGHAN’S BODY!!!). Some may even be dual wardrobe cards, with TWO pieces of fabric.
Of course, both of those special kinds of cards are rare, and there’s no guarantee you’ll get either of them, but that’s part of the fun (like scratching off lottery tickets).
What other kinds of cards will there be? You may get character biography cards, quotes, or “Speak Outlander”. There’s even a special binder available to put your cards in (you’ll want to go to a sports collecting store, or Target or WalMart, to get vinyl pocket sheets to put your cards in, and then into the binder), and the binder will come with an exclusive card. Right now, only Season 1 will be released, but Season 2 is in the works! You can see the official website page here. Cards will come 5 to a pack. You’ll also be able to buy a display box that will have 24 packs in it, if you want to give yourself a better chance to get some good cards.
When will these be out? Cryptozoic says that this depends on when they get the rest of the autographed cards back that they’re expecting, but they hope to have them out in about 6 weeks, so end of September-beginning of October. I expect to have a couple of cards to give away shortly before they come out. Where to buy them will be a little trickier – right now, there are only a couple of dealers listed on the site as committing to selling the Outlander cards, but as I get more information on that, I’ll certainly bring it to you.
Are you a multi-show fan? Cryptozoic also has cards for Big Bang Theory, Orphan Black, Arrow, The Flash, Walking Dead, and many other shows. Check out the company’s website if you’re interested.
