Episode two of “Z Nation”, “A New Mission”, sees our group split up. Roberta, Addy, Doc, and Hector find themselves teamed up with Sun Mei. Sun Mei and her team of soldiers have come from Beijing in the hopes of using Murphy’s blood as a cure. Although the two groups got off to a rough start, Roberta soon learns that they have used nearly all of their resources just to make it as far as they did.
After the submarine blew up, Murphy managed to make it to shore with Dr. Merch, 10K and the submarine captain. The captain and Dr. Merc have bite marks on their faces, meaning that they are now under Murphy’s control. It quickly becomes apparent that Murphy has a plan brewing. He’s had enough and has decided that it is best if he takes matters into his own hands. The new mission for Murphy is to turn humanity into Blends who are under his control. What could go wrong, right? Though 10K isn’t happy about tagging along with Murphy, it seems that he’s unable to leave on his own. We don’t see any bite marks on him, but something is clearly wrong. He has no choice but to follow Murphy.
Sun Mei, her solders and the rest of the group decide to work together to make it to a supply drop provided by Sun Mei’s people. Of course, there are a lot of zombies there for the ride, as well as a different kind of enemy. This time they are up against Enders, who are feral humans with no sanity left. They will attack anything and they are extremely dangerous.
We get to see a few really cool weapons in this episode. Addy is given a new Z whacker with one main difference: it almost works like a taser as well! Sun Mei’s soldiers even have a grenade that can scan for faces and aim projectiles straight for the head. Unfortunately, that very weapon not only took out a group of zombies, but backfired on the gang and killed Sun Mei’s team. Though she was heartbroken, Roberta was able to give one of the speeches she is so famous for. She convinces Sun Mei to continue on their journey and make it to the supply drop. All hope is not lost. She knows they will find Murphy.
They make it to the drop only to find out that someone else beat them to it. As it turns out, Roberta wasn’t wrong. They found Murphy, but not in a way that they were hoping for. Murphy and Roberta have their own agendas and Murphy is no longer listening to anyone but himself. During this heated discussion, it becomes very clear that Murphy is no longer interested in dealing with doctors in order to work on a cure. He has his own idea of how he will put an end to the apocalypse.
Murphy thinks he is giving the world a gift. Roberta soon realizes that there is nothing she can say to change his mind. Murphy gives her the option of working with him on his own mission. He won’t join hers. Roberta refuses and answers his proposal with a gun to his head. Unfortunately, Murphy has gained control of 10K and uses his sharpshooting skills to make Roberta back off.
Murphy leaves them, but 10K did help out his friends by killing a few Enders that posed a threat. Addy and Doc have the feeling that 10K was back there, but they both know that they can’t think about that anymore. They just need to let it go and continue on with their new mission. They know they need to stop Murphy’s mission of creating his own master race, but they aren’t the only one looking for Murphy. The Man from “No Mercy” is back with one name on his list: Murphy.
I was glad to see Citizen Z in “A New Mission” as he was always a favorite in the show. Since his dog is fine and he is fine, and it looks like Citizen Z isn’t as lonely as he used was before. A young woman named Kaya rescued him. She lives with her Uncle Kaskae and nana. The area is free from zombies and everything is quite peaceful and relaxing for Citizen Z and his new comrades.
A lot has happened in this episode that has completely changed the playing field. “Z Nation” has turned Murphy into somewhat of a villain, though he is still someone who many can sympathize with. Murphy has always been somewhat selfish, but I believe everything has driven him to this point. He sees what has become of the humans and can clearly feel what the zombies feel. He wants to solve the problem, but he doesn’t trust anyone to do the right thing. He can only rely on himself now.
Earlier in the episode, Z Nation shocks us with more strange occurrences. Murphy and his gang of Blends run across a giant mass of frenzied zombies rolling through the land, savagely attacking and eating each other. They were oblivious to their surroundings. Murphy could feel that they were starving. It only strengthened his resolve to put an end to all of this. The new dynamic with 10K and Murphy is heartbreaking. 10K was so passionate about never being bitten by Murphy especially after seeing what happened to Cassandra. “Z Nation” definitely knows how to reel you in and has started off this season with incredibly strong content.
