WARNING: This post contains SPECULATION and SPOILERS about season 2 of VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER.
Netflix released a new trailer/sizzle reel today for Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 2. This is ahead of their upcoming panel at New York Comic Con (NYCC) this Friday. In this video, there is beautiful cut scenes of the Lions against the backdrop of new worlds, battles against Emperor Zarkon and his minions… and one single line of dialogue that will change the entire Paladin team forever.
If you were like me and watched the original 80’s Voltron: Defenders of the Universe, you remember Sven and his story-line. When I watched Legendary Defender season 1, I admit that I was trying not to let myself like Shiro. I equated him with Sven and thought he wasn’t going to last long.
You can imagine my surprise that he made it through the entire season. Now Shiro is Space Dad, and you can’t help but love Space Dad after watching the full season. Add into the fact that Allura’s characterization is completely different from the 80’s and I let go of that idea that Shiro = Sven. Of course that also means Keith – my baby since ‘84 – is the moody, temperamental rogue in the Red Lion. (Note: it was a lot to adjust to. Once I finish my full re-watch of Voltron: Defender of the Universe I’m going to write up character comparisons).
Then came the video today and just… wow. They went there. Or they are heavily hinting that they are going to go there. We have no idea how this is going to pan out. The set-up they established in Legendary Defender is that the Lion and Paladin are symbiotic. The Lion chooses it’s Paladin. This is a break from the original where the space explorer had to find the lion and had a key that turned it on.
When Shiro took Black, Lance took Blue, and Keith took Red, it was an obvious break in rank. This sealed the fact this is a NEW series with new rules. But if Shiro is now back on the path of Sven and will be taken away from the team – either temporarily or permanently – how does the established “rule” of the symbiotic relationship effect Paladins taking over another’s Lion. CAN Keith even take over Black Lion? Who would take Red Lion in his place? Will Allura leave her position commanding the castle ship to become a Paladin? Do we trust Coran to fly the castle? Or could this even lead to an opening for Lotor to make his appearance in this series? (Come on, Netflix, where the heck is the Evil Prince of Planet Doom?)
Hopefully some of these questions will get answered during the Friday NYCC panel:
