Gotham: Season Three Returns! “Ghosts” Review

Ghosts arise! With the cliffhanger we were left with in 2016 I’m sure everyone was waiting as impatiently as I was for the mid-season premier. To recap:  Lee’s fiance Mario was shot by Jim, Selina’s mother returns to Gotham, Bruce steals a crystal owl from the Court of Owls, and Penguin finally confessed his love to Nygma.  Gotham is, in my opinion, pretty power packed and full of surprises. We’ve had twists and turns and shocks throughout the series and I’m not expecting any of that to change.

You mess with the bull, you get the zsasz

First thing’s first: I’m not quite sure why they didn’t arrest Jim. They really didn’t have any proof that Jim didn’t shoot Mario in cold blood, even though everyone knew he had Tetch’s blood in him.  Still, the murder of the son of the biggest crime-boss in Gotham is enough to get you whacked. Falcone was not slow to put that hit out.  Jim also comes to a head with Lee in front of all of the GCPD. Now she has every right to hate him, but at that moment I wished Jim would tell her why he shot Mario! Doesn’t “hey he had a knife to your back” suffice? Aye!  Luckily Lee, being the intelligent woman she is, went digging for answers and spoke to Barnes, who went all lunatic on her and seemingly changed her mind.

After a plea to Falcone, Lee got the hit called off of Jim and saved his life.  Now, Zsasz the insane and awesome hitman was completely and utterly off his game this episode! Usually, when Zsasz wants you dead, you’re dead.  For some reason Jim was able to evade all of Zsasz and his posse’s attempts to kill him. Jim even got the better of him, ending with a shotgun pointed at Zsasz’s back. Crazy!

mr. mayor, are those skeletons in your closet?

Our Penguin is back, murdering his new Chief Of Staff because he thinks he’s the one who dug up his father’s remains. Without question it was Nygma, I hope everyone knew that much. I didn’t have any idea how he pulled off the dead father thing though, but a shapeshifter, that’s genius.

Anyway, back to the main event, the scary television interview where everyone throughout America can learn who Mayor Oswald Cobblepot is.  I will be the first to admit that it was very weird to hear “America”, because when I watch this show I never imagine it fits into the “real world”. Yes, yes I know the DC Universe takes place in the “real world” so hush.  Regardless, that whole thing was bad. Penguin lost his mind over his father, committed murder again, and then went onto live TV and did an interview.  At first, it seemed like he was doing alright but after his “father” walked by he ran off. Of course his parting words were “screw the people”. Oh boy!

mamma cat’s got secrets

Now, I was pretty interested in why they were bringing Selina’s mom into this mix and I’m still not 100% sure.  Her arrival does bring a whole new mystery to light.  The new villain, or whatever he is, is probably going to mess up the relationship between Selina and Bruce. That or it’ll mess up Selina’s new relationship with her mother. Regardless, it will turn into a very interesting experience.

Jerome is (not) back!

I will have to admit the thing I was looking forward to most (aside from Penguin’s existence) was Jerome’s return.  Sure he showed up, but he wasn’t alive, so boo. I absolutely loved the meeting of the “new Maniax” and the ending hinting that he will most likely return.  Either way, it was a bit weird that Jim and Harvey just started swinging at the new Maniax when they were running, because like Jim said they weren’t really doing anything illegal. Oh well! I wonder what’s going to happen next and whether or not the new Maniax will bring him back to life.

Nonetheless, this mid-season return did not disappoint me.  I got all of the drama, heart-ache, and excitement I was hoping for and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
