Teen Wolf started the New Year right where we left off by sending Scott and his pack to run down a clue that Stiles gave them before losing contact again in “Ghosted”. Canaan is a town that the Ghost Riders wiped out back in 1997. Malia, Scott and Lydia head out there, unsure of why Stiles is sending them there but hoping for a clue on how to save him.
But this ghost town is turning out to be a bad place where they are seeing visions: Scott’s mother dead, Malia’s family with Theo trying to kill her. Lydia also feels a weird energy, and that is when they see a little boy in town who leads them home. There they meet Lenore, a broken woman who wasn’t taken by the Riders that day, and who has remained in the town alone for years. The little boy, Caleb, who Scott and Malia discover died a long time ago. Lenore reveals to Lydia that the Riders brought back her dead son, and that they then took everyone – making her believe that it was her fault they had come. She is also a banshee, which is the reason she wasn’t taken.
Lenore doesn’t want the three of them to leave – she and Caleb have been alone for a long time now. She uses her powers to seal them inside, and then attempts to drown Scott and Malia when they work to find a way to escape. It’s only when Lenore realizes that Lydia is doomed to end up like her if she doesn’t find a way to save Beacon Hills that she lets her, Scott and Malia go.
Now Canaan’s last day is April 8, 1997. This is also Stiles’ birthday. Coincidence? Does this mean that Stiles is somehow connected to the Riders in ways we have yet to be shown? We also learned that Lenore got her son back from the Riders and then they took the town – is this foreshadowing that Sheriff may have something to do with Claudia’s return and therefore the Rider’s appearance in town? For a moment I was going to consider Stiles being the one who asked for Claudia back, but there is no indication he knew why he was being targeted.
Speaking of the Sheriff: he is so very done with being told about Stiles by Scott, which is probably going to lead to a lot of guilt and heartbreak come Stiles’ return. Add in any connection to Claudia’s presence he may now have… I’m not looking forward to the fallout from the Stilinski family reunion.
Meanwhile, Chris has an infection from the Rider’s whip that is spreading. Melissa is working to smuggle him away before the doctor does emergency surgery, and together they figure out how to save him by a more supernatural means including “raiding the hospital pharmacy, an apothecary, and a salad bar…”. Chris only knows the cure in Celtic though and passes out before he can help Melissa figure the final component out. However, with some help of her phone translator, she learns what all the ingredients are and make a salve to remove the poison from Chris’ body. My ship lives on to sail another day.
Liam and Hailey are planning a way to save the school from the riders. Scott’s rule is to just not destroy his house. When they go into the faculty supply room, they run into Mr. Douglas who is working on making something. He saw the Riders, at least that’s what he says. Did he really, or is he just saying this to get onto their good side. He was listening into their plan in the hallway before after all. Either way, he is more than accepting of the supernatural for someone who is playing at being human, and trying to help them figure out a plan to trap a Rider in the bunker comes off like he’s helping the kids with a science fair experiment.
Then out of nowhere, Kira’s mom reappears to bring Kira’s sword. She also points out that Liam will be responsible for whatever happens next – which is bringing Theo back from Hell! Liam’s plan is to have Theo absorb the lightning so that they can control it and therefore control the Riders.
Secondly – if you were plotting a storyline with a character with lightning as part of their storyline, why did you fire the actor whose character was the thunder kitsune?! This should be something Kira should be doing (and having a purpose in a season for the first time since season 3B) and not bringing Theo back for it. I am not happy with this choice, and there better be a good character reason for Theo’s return since his story has a good and just ending to it.
Also thirdly – Kira gave Scott her “tail” to watch over, but in this screencap (see right) from the season 5 finale, that looks like her belt buckle/hilt on her pants. So we just conveniently decided to move the plot device around and then leave it with Liam instead of her mother who Kira had trusted her weapon to… yeah, I’m not buying that piece Teen Wolf and I have to call you out on a pretty crappy way to bring Theo back while continuing to just screw over on what could have been a good female character if they had cared enough to write her as more than Scott’s rebound girlfriend.
Rant over. For now.
There are a few things though that Theo’s reemergence could come in handy, though. First off – he remembers Stiles. There are now two people in Beacon Hills who have all their memories of Stiles intact (Peter being the other). He also has Mr. Douglas worried since Theo was also a part of the Dread Doctor team. That should lead to more progression on the Nazi Werewolf storyline. And well, if nothing else… Malia has a nice, self-healing punching bag she can use until she gets her control back.
We’re now at the point where the last three episodes of Teen Wolf start to pick up their intensity leading to the 6A finale. The last image we saw was Sheriff pulling back the wallpaper and looking beyond it – which we know is where Stiles’ room is hiding. He’s going to have to come to terms with his son’s loss now, and we will see if he confronts Claudia with this and how that turns out. The next week preview also brings us back to Peter (and Melissa getting in a bit of revenge with a needle into his chest), and Ryan Kelly has been hinting that we will be seeing him in his hellhound glory next week as well.
No matter what, we can only hope that the pack can get to Stiles before being at the waystation will suck away his soul to the point where he becomes a Ghost Rider himself. Who knows if there is a way to save him at that point. Though I’m not going to lie – I wouldn’t mind seeing Dylan O’Brien in cowboy gear on a horse either. Just saying.
