They’re back! What a wonderful return to the second half of season 7! The Walking Dead returned with a fantastic episode this Sunday! Episode 709, ‘Rock in the Road‘, brought us back to where we need to be.! With the majority of our group reunited, the stage is set for the beginning of ‘all out war’.
I LOVED this episode! Just seeing the start, where Father Gabriel is taken, set my mouth watering! It’s been a cold, winter wait for the return of our favorite series. Who is behind the sudden thievery, and quick exit of Father G? Well, if you didn’t watch closely enough, you didn’t see it. There was someone in the front seat of the car as Father G drove away from Alexandria! Yes, you heard it here! Now even though Father G wasn’t quite the most likeable character in the start, I have grown to respect that bald headed, creepy smiling dude! He has redeemed himself more ways than not, and is an interesting character. No way in Hell, would he rob the stores of food, and take off, running away!. It was most likely ‘boots’, who ambushed him and made him steal and run off. After all, they had been spying on him, when last we saw.
Some of the things that we found out from this episode, are as follows. Gregory is still a whining, cowardly, rat bastard, as he always was. Again, he called Maggie by another name, while trying to weasel out of any kind of assistance for our group. We won’t see any kind of help from him at all. That will lead to his downfall, hopefully soon. I really want to see Maggie step up into her role from the comic, of being leader of Hilltop.
Enid takes it upon herself to do some scouting, while the group talks to Gregory. She has recruited several of the Hilltop people into the war to come. They are ready to fight for the cause. Good play Enid! I am proud of you!
The meeting with King Ezekiel didn’t fare much better. The King doesn’t want to risk any of his people. All the while, he is lying to them. by not letting them know the real danger of the Saviors. He will be a hard nut to crack. but by leaving Daryl there, (Ezekiel gave him sanctuary), maybe some sense can be talked into him. The Kingdom has the numbers and they are trained people, but the risk is too much to bear. We know that Richard is hell bent on fighting, trying to talk Carol and Morgan into it. But will his eagerness get someone killed? Keep a watch out for this guy. He will try something that won’t be very nice in the future episodes.
Carol is seen by Ben out in the woods. He is practicing being a bad ass, and she is walking around with a gun. I was glad to see her. She is still in a state, not wanting to be in with the group, Her heart is torn, but she is a survivor. Watch her character go through some changes, and maybe even some danger in the episodes to come. She is said to have a big part in the finale, from all the theories I’ve read.
The most epic walker kill ever, occurred in this episode! Our group comes across a bobby trap set up by Fay Joey and the Saviors, for a herd of walkers on the highway. The group overhears Negan talking about poor Joey, on the 2 way radio that Jesus stole.Wanting to confiscate the dynamite from the trap, our group goes about dismantling the explosives. Rosita seems like a natural in bombs in this instance. They get all the sticks they can, throwing the iffy ones to the side. As the walkers approach on the road, Rick and Michonne use the two vehicles that are tethered together by wire, to slash most of the herd in half! It was epic, and people are still talking about it this morning!(See video below.)
When they finally return to Alexandria, they find they have visitors. Creepy Simon has come to call, to see if Daryl has returned home after escaping. Of course , our group plays done and after a quick search, the Saviors leave. Rick and company find that the pantry has been raided and Father Gabriel is missing. I don’t like the fact that some of the group seem to believe that father G would steal all the supplies and run, But Rick knows that something is wrong and they go to search for him. he left a clue for Rick in the bible he carries. Boat. So Rick and company take off for the boat, following the trail of footprints. As they approach a junkyard, low and behold a twig snaps, and our group is surrounded. There are at least a hundred, if not more, and they do have weapons. Some are homemade. As this new group encircles our friends, Rick’s eyes light up and he smiles! What a way to end it and leave us hanging! Arrrg! It seems as though Rick, although in dire straights, has found a army of people in a fighting mood. Will this new group, (known as Garbage Pail Kids by spoilers), be willing and able to help our group fight Negan and his Saviors? Will they be friendly in the long run? And where are they holding Father Gabriel?
Next week’s episode will surely delve into some of the questions left hanging.
