Star Trek: Discovery – The Return Of Mudd

A beloved character from the original Star Trek series will be part of the latest venture into the Trek world. Rainn Wilson has been tabbed to play Harry Mudd, the quintessential con man from the original series.

Wilson, a three-time Emmy winner for his role as Dwight Schrute on The Office, has some big shoes to fill via Roger C. Carmel, who originated the role in the 1960’s series. For my money, this is a very interesting casting choice and one I’m anxious to see play out as the CBS All Access show gets rolling later this year. Just looking at it on a surface level, I have every confidence that Wilson will bring the right combination of swashbuckling confidence and opportunism that are Mudd’s calling cards.

Rainn Wilson has been cast as the iconic Harry Mudd for Star Trek: Discovery

Wilson starred in a 13-episode run of Backstrom in 2015, two years after The Office came to a close. He has numerous acting credits, most recently The Boy and Army of One, as well as voice credits. Earlier in the year, Jason Isaacs was tabbed as the Lorca, who will helm the Discovery. It will be fun to see these two tremendous acting talents play off each other when their paths cross. Given the casting, it would seem to indicate the Wilson will have a recurring role in Discovery.

Star Trek: Discovery will feature new characters and new missions as it premieres on CBS before moving to CBS All Access sometime later this year.
