Blue Exorcist

Best Anime Winter 2017 – Our Top Picks

By: Robert Prentice
Crunchy roll Funimation

It is that time of year again where we switch seasons of anime. The winter 2017 anime season is coming to a close and the spring season is about to start. In fact some very exciting new titles have already started for spring but thats for another post. So when we look back on the winter 2017 season, the question we ask is: what are the best anime of winter 2017?

Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga

It has been 6 years since the first anime season came out. Blue Exorcist is extremely popular as the manga continues to publish. Technically a second season came out with the original series. However, it was an anime original plot that didn’t follow the manga. That didn’t go over too well and so a new season was launched in the winter 2017 season.

Kyoto Saga picks up right at the point in the original series where Rin is exposed to his classmates as the son of Satan. This is considered one of the more popular arcs in the manga. It is then that someone steals the Left Eye of the Impure King, sealed away in the deepest part of the academy, and Rin and the others find themselves embroiled in an unexpected crisis.

You can watch the new season of Blue Exorcist on Crunchyroll.com

Saga Of Tanya The Evil

This is one of the odder nuggets of the winter 2017 anime season. At first we didn’t know what to make of it. However, as the series went on we were hooked. I will warn you in advance that the anime covers some very dark material and brings about comparisons with actual world historic events. So there we said it.

A little girl with blond hair, blue eyes, and porcelain skin fights on the front lines of a brutal war set in a fantasy world. What others don’t know is that she’s a reincarnated Japanese office worker whose career-driven attitude and ruthless drive to conquer have carried over into Tanya’s life. With such a unique set of skills, Tanya begins to climb the ranks of the imperial army.

You can watch Saga of Tanya The Evil subbed on Crunchyroll or dubbed on Funimation.

Tales of Zestiria the X 2nd Season

Legends speak of the Shepherd, a savior who will bring peace to the seraphim and human worlds. Sorey has spent his life studying ancient books and exploring ruins to learn more about the legendary savior. When he and his seraphim companion Mikleo encounter a mysterious girl in the ruins, the stories of the Shephard become Sorey’s reality. Is he strong enough to take on the evil Lord of Calamity?

With the second season, the characters and story start to mesh together better. Including tie-ins with other tales series which makes it more interesting. But the most redeeming quality of this show is simply the visuals and fight scenes. UFO table has again brought us stunning animation and the series provides great fight scenes.

You can catch the subbed and dubbed episodes over on Funimation.

Well those are our top 3 picks of the season but there are far more great anime of the season, so which other ones do we recommend?

  1. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans Season 2
  2. Masamune-kun’s Revenge
  3. Twin Star Exorcists
  4. Interviews with Monster Girls

Honorable Mention: Naruto Shippuden

I think its worth also bringing attention to the end of an era. Naruto Shippuden aired its final (500th) episode in the winter 2017 anime season. Most of the final episodes were mostly filling in the time gap before a new era begins. Yes, Naruto isn’t gone but the new series will focus on, their kids. The Boruto anime begins airing on Hulu and Crunchyroll later in april. The movie and volume 1 of the manga in english were released recently as well. So if you are still a big Naruto fan, be sure to pick those up.

Did we miss a show you enjoyed? We know there are tons of additional anime that sadly we just can’t get to each season but we love recommendations from our readers. Many of our featured top picks come from recommendations of our readers. So feel free to let us know!
