As Whovians we have a general idea of what to expect in Peter Capaldi’s last turn as the Doctor. With Bill as the new companion, she will serve as the eyes, and mouth, of we viewers. She is, like so many companions before her, the viewer by proxy. She’s an ordinary individual suddenly thrust into a fantasy universe filled with incredible things. Yes, we know all that because we’re regular viewers, some of us going back decades to what is now called “Classic” Doctor Who.
I say all of the above not as a condemnation that the show is predictable, but as praise that it’s something familiar. With a show whose main characters are constantly changing, familiar aspects of the show keep it grounded for viewers. That familiarity, and that blue box, let us know that even though the players have changed, it’s still Doctor Who. We look forward to that as much as we look forward to new vistas, surprises, and monsters.
Instead of getting more specific about season 10, I’m going to share the video and let you watch for yourself.
