Next week’s Doctor Who is a classic “haunted house” scenario. Bill and some of her friends rent out a ridiculously cheap, and ridiculously creepy, house. It’s a huge place and the price is too good to be true, but Bill and friends have to find this out the hard way. This, of course, is the impetus for the hour of adventure and scares we’re sure to get next week.
My first impression upon watching this trailer was that it reminds me a lot of episode 709, “Hide”. Both installments take place in creepy houses with strange goings-on, creaky floors, and a ghostly/ghastly presence saturating the atmosphere. This is not a criticism. I loved “Hide” a lot.
These kind of episodes feel very much like some of the classic Doctor Who episodes that relied more on suspense than visuals. Of course, back then it was more a matter of necessity, what with episode budgets being not much more than the price of a loaf of bread. We’re spoiled with the visuals of today, but I love being spoiled by VFX. I also like being scared, tense, excited, and happy. Doctor Who brings all of these things.
