Gotham Episode 16 Review: Darkness Rises

Gotham Will Burn

The Court of Owls has decided: Gotham is to be cleansed and nothing will stop them.  Except maybe one of their own.  Gordon’s uncle, Frank, has decided to reach out and bring news of the oncoming doom to Gordon.  Gordon discovers a dark secret about Frank in the process, which makes him really lose trust in him.

Consequently, Harvey and Gordon concoct a scheme to follow the lead that Frank has given.  There is a weapon of mass destruction that is supposed to be arriving and in order to not raise suspicion Gordon hires Barbara to investigate.  Barbara is now the queen of Gotham and is ruling with all of the glitz and glamour that Fish Mooney did!  With Tabitha assisting, they’re the femme fatale and ready to kill.  The Court of Owls discover Gordon is sniffing around and put the hit out on him.  Frank is the one who has to kill Gordon but when Gordon arrives things go very wrong.  The incident gets Gordon a face to face with the head of the Court of Owls, and must now negotiate the safety of Gotham.

Truth hurts…but not for freaks

Penguin and Ivy make a cute team.  Ivy saved his life and now all she wants is for Penguin to be nice to her!  After not listening to her advice, Penguin is captured by his “goon” and is about to be auctioned off.  Ivy uses her persuasive powers and saves them both.  Poor Penguin learns the truth about his reign.  No one ever respected him, they just were afraid of him and thought of him as a freak.  To get revenge Ivy and Penguin decide to build an “Army of Freaks”.  I can’t wait to see were this goes.

Bruce is in the process of training and finally his teacher tells him “Gotham needs a protector”.  I definitely think it’s a little too early to start him on the Batman route, but I guess it was going to happen eventually.  Bruce does not start out strong, mostly he runs away in fear.  It’s to be expected though, he’s young and in a new place, plus his teacher keeps forcing him into his subconscious where he watches his mother and father die again and again.

In conclusion, after the past few episodes being so fast paced and full of action, this episode was a bit of a slower pace.  It’s kind of a welcome change though, and it’s just the calm before the even bigger storm to come!
