I first read Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time when I was in high school, I think. I remember being completely entranced by the story of Meg Murry, braving the completely unknown to find her genius brother, Charles Wallace, who had gone in search of their father, a scientist who disappeared during the course of his research. The descriptions of the worlds they bounced in and out of captivated me – the slow world, the dark world. It was probably one of my first introductions to sci fi literature.
Disney is now producing another version of this book (there had been one that didn’t do well in 2003). Today at the D23 fan convention, Disney released the first trailer for the new movie, set to come out in March 2018. This version stars Chris Pine as Professor Murry, and continues the star power with Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling as the Meg’s guides, Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who, and Zach Galifiniakis as the Happy Medium. Newcomer Storm Reid plays Meg.
Here’s the trailer:
From Deadline Hollywood:
The epic adventure takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and ultimately, the triumph of love.
The trailer, which premiered at the D23 expo, establishes a distinct tone and look from director Ava DuVernay. Set to a cover of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams”, it starts with a bearded Dr. Alex Murry (Pine), explaining travel through space and time. Mrs. Which (Winfrey) explains how he has accomplished something great and also dangerous, as he has been captured. Now it’s up to Meg (Reid) to help rescue him.
