Fans across the globe have been waiting eagerly for the news – Who will play the next Doctor? It’s been known for a while that Peter Capaldi was bowing out at the end of season 10 (actually, during the Christmas Special). With that news in mind, Capaldi’s run was bittersweet to say the least. But now it’s time to look to the future and welcome the next incarnation of our timeless Time Lord.
Speculation has been running rampant, with the usual hair pulling and gnashing of teeth by some. Every regeneration cycle seems to have the same emotional impact on the fans, which somehow manages to be more grueling than the Doctor’s actual regeneration. That’s us fans for you; we start out disliking the “new guy”, then we sort of settle in and get comfy, then we fall in love with him (her?), then we wail when the next regeneration occurs. It’s a wash-rinse-repeat cycle that’s been going on since the early 1960s and one I hope continues for many years to come.
And now, the cycle begins again. Here’s the video from BBC America announcing the new face of the Doctor!
Jodie Whittaker, probably best known to US audiences as Beth Latimer from Broadchurch, is an unexpected, but wonderful choice. I’ve seen her work in several projects and she has the range necessary to play the mad, compassionate, often brash Time Lord we’ve come to love. This is great news and a new era begins for Doctor Who. See you at Christmas!
