Midnight, Texas Review: Sexy Beast

Midnight, Texas ups the drama factor with “Sexy Beast,” as more evil is drawn to Midnight. This week, a succubus is on the loose which could bring law enforcement’s eye back to Midnight. Just when you think everything is finally calming down…bam, succubus. Her first victim might not have won brother/son of the year award, as he’s just pawned his father’s Rolex with Bobo and is on the run with the cash. So of course he can’t help but to stop when he spots an attractive young blonde bombshell sitting on the side of the road. Unfortunately for him, the fun doesn’t last long as she literally starts to devour him in his own car just outside of Midnight. Her kill count is up to one AND she’s got a sweet new ride. This can’t be good for our Midnighters.

Speaking of them, boy do we have some drama going on in their small down this week. Manfred and Creek are still secretly seeing each other, trying to keep her dad from finding out. He’s made it very clear that he disapproves of Manfred and doesn’t want Creek to waste her time with him. But Creek seemed a little off this week, she’s having fun with Manfred and showing her quirky personality a bit more, but she didn’t seem romantically invested at all. Manfred of course is smitten beyond belief with her, but she had a much cooler tone this week, more like it’s a fun fling just to piss off her dad than anything else.

Manfred at least gets a job out of the whole succubus deal. After his sister confirms with Bobo that the Rolex belong to their father, he offers up Manfred’s services in assisting to find her deadbeat brother. She’ll pay him 5 grand if he will help her find him. Though he’s a terrible human being, their parents are overcome with worry for the missing thief and money is just an object. Right away he’s able to see that this poor guy is dead, but that leads him on a chase to find the succubus and this bloke’s car. Too bad Manfred’s family isn’t more like that, the latest message from Hightower makes it pretty clear that this debt goes further than monetary repercussions. He also makes an off handed remark to his dead grandma, Xylda about Hightower being her son. Is Hightower Manfred’s dad?

Bobo and Fiji finally take their friendship a step forward, but only after some hard truths come forward. Fiji invites both Bobo and Olivia for dinner, Olivia takes this moment to school Fiji on how to win Bobo’s heart… by lending her a little black dress and some bad ass heels, telling her to make it be a date, not a dinner party. Though Fiji isn’t certain, she dresses the part and sets up a romantic dinner for them. Bobo calls, to let her know he’s just going to change his work clothes and head over, but he finds his house has been ransacked by the asshole supremacist group. He takes off in a fury to go find and attack the racists on his own, which is already promised Fiji he wouldn’t do. After getting cancelled on, Manfred shows up because they need her help with the Succubus. She’s able to create a potion that will strip her beauty away, so she won’t be able to lure men into their deaths anymore. Manfred followed his lead from the dead guy and after some questionable stops, finds the succubus. He also finds that her body count is up to two, nearly becoming her third victim. Luckily he escapes and after calling a Midnighter’s meeting, they all agree that she’s definitely a succubus and that her next likely stop would be Cartoon Saloon, as it’s ladies night.

Though Olivia is around to help out for the succubus, we get a deeper insight into her background this week. Along with why her leeching relationship with Lem is so emotionally driven. We finally get to follow her out on a job, and damn is she a good hit-woman. I would always want Olivia on my side in a fight, she’s not just taking out anyone, but taking out those who screw over others for their own gain. So there has to be some respect given for that. She notices that she’s being followed though, which doesn’t sit well for her so she drugs the guy and brings him home. After messing with him some, she learns that her father sent him. She has to take a moment and have Lem leech away the terrible feelings she is having as the guy explains that her father just wants to know she’s okay. They take a moment to help out with the succubus problem and just leave the guy there, handcuffed in the bathroom.

Over at Cartoon Saloon, everyone is on the lookout for a beautiful blonde who happens to also want to eat people. But their own dramas have followed them here. Creek’s younger brother shows up because he is also worried about Manfred being bad for Creek. Fiji sees Bobo at the Saloon and is instantly annoyed at being stood up by him if he was just gonna be at the bar anyway. She follows him into a back room where she stops him from hurting one of the men in the supremacist group. Now she’s doubly annoyed, not only did he stand her up, it was to follow these losers which he told her he wasn’t going to do. Bobo has some explaining to do…

Creek escorts her brother outside, instructing him to go home when she spots the succubus trying to take her next victim. She texts Manfred that they’re outside and is able to get some of Fiji’s potion into the succubus’s mouth, beginning her transformation. This leads the midnighters on a chase through the woods with the now hideous succubus. She goes after creek’s brother and they have no choice but to burn her with a propane tank flame, close enough to dragon’s breath right? Sure the succubus is handled, but Joe knows there is more coming and still hasn’t bothered to warn anyone else in the group.

Back at Olivia’s, the messenger lucks out, this time. She explains that her father was never around when she was young and needed him. Her step-mother had a problem with drugs and after her dad cut off the money for that supply, she found other ways of getting her fix. Exploiting young Olivia and her body in order to pay for her addiction. If her father wasn’t around then to care about how she was he sure as shit doesn’t get to try and be there now. Lem notes that she must be feeling generous tonight because normally death is what meets the PI’s her father sends. This is a huge look into Olivia’s past and deeper character intricacies.

And FINALLY, Bobo realizes that Fiji has always been there for him, will always be there for him and asks if friendship is really all that she wants. Because he thinks that maybe something deeper is going on. Not going to lie that I squeed a bit at the tv when the two finally kissed, taking that friendship to the next level.
