Gosick

Gosick – The Complete Series Review

Funimation Gosick

In this 1920s tale of dark intrigue and romance, Japanese exchange student Kazuya Kujo strikes up a fast but uneasy friendship with the doll-like genius Victorique. Both outcasts, Victorique and Kujo explore the unsolved mysteries at their school. As they begin taking on more cases, a sinister plot begins to unfold in the shadows around them.

The series has been compared to Black Butler in the past but I don’t see Gosick being that dark. Think of Gosick as set in a similar time period as Black Butler but more of a Sherlock series. Kujo and Victorique are both outcasts with complex family lives that has brought them together to solve crimes. Kujo is your typical shy and caring boy who is a bit too trusting. While Victorique is the opposite in every way. She doesn’t trust anyone and gives off a strong abrasive personality. Though in truth she cares for Kujo much more than she lets on.

Gosick is fun and lighthearted in its stories, while still being able to keep the mysterious suspense of its stories in place. With each passing episode, the over-arching story is slowly unraveled. Each character around them is quirky in their own rights but each one with a reason. Even Victorique’s brother has a reason for wearing his hair in that ridiculous way. I did enjoy how each of the ‘ghost’ stories tied a bit into folk lore each time. Made for a great touch to the series that kept it interesting.

The classical Victorian setting for the series is where it gets its comparisons to Black Butler. And yes while we get to solve mysteries in similar ways that about where the comparison ends. Apphia Yu and Matt Shipman as our main characters were a great pick for the english cast. The series is broken up into 2 parts for a total of 24 episodes. Funimation just finished releasing part 2 on Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. You can pickup both at Amazon.com now.

If you like Victorian era crime drama or Sherlock style crime solving then this is a series worth grabbing or checking out on Funimation.com.
