Anne Kenney live-tweeted last night’s episode 302, which she wrote, and answered some fan questions. I figured you might like to know what she said!

Q Beautiful! Handed the sensitive parts with such grace.
A Is there any other way to handle sensitive parts? ;-
Q Was the ep originally called The Dunbonnet or was it always Surrender?
A It started life as The Dunbonnet.
Q Reason for starting 6 years in the future?
A LOTS of time to cover. Had to start somewhere.
The wooden leg on the cobblestones was ROUGH!
Ryan Fletcher was so great as Corporal MacGregor (and a MUCH nicer guy than his character).
That is a REAL DEER and it was HEAVY. (from deer farm)
Q Do you know how many Scots turned red coats or were red coats at this time?
A No exact number, but it was more than you would think.
Diana Gabaldon: Doves are ungodly messy nesters….
Anne: Luckily there were only a few real birds! We shot the exterior on location at Lallybroch and built our own dovecote in set for interiors.
Loved this set (apartment) – so many details reminded me of my parents who married in 1950.
Cute baby or WHAT?!
Art dept built outside of cave on location! Amazing folks.
Q Transformation from Jamie Fraser to the Dunbonnet fantastic by Sam Heughan. Was it necessary to stay in character behind the scenes?
A Yep, and he wasn’t very happy about it! Beard was very itchy!!
Diana: It even looked itchy!
A Right?!
Q Is it just me or does Romann Berrux slip into a little Scottish accent once in a while?
A Well he’s been living with the Scots for a long while now!
Q Great job with the raven!
A Not easy! Trained bird, stuffed bird, editing!! Voila!
OutlanderCast tweeted: Jamie has a baby in one hand and a dagger in the other. Who knew that could be sexy?
Anne: Don’t try this at home!!
Q Where do you find such cute babies?
A Casting does it — and they’re usually twins!
Those goats! So cute but real scene stealers. And escape artists!
(When Claire tells Frank, “I’ve been missing my husband”), @Heughligans tweeted: *Which* husband, Claire? #detailsdetails
A Ha! She’s trying to make that Frank thing work. Wonder if she’ll succeed?
Run Fergus! Run!
(fan) Jamie to the rescue! High five! Or…um…
Anne: No shame!
Aw, Fergus (and Diana) – killer turn with Fergus.
I LOVE Eton Mess! Got to eat the props this day!
(ed. note: Want to try it? Here’s a recipe.)
This was a fun scene to write – Frank and Claire being snarky about Millie and Jerry.
Don’t know whose idea it was to have Jenny turn in J (someone else does it in the book), but I loved it. Loved writing it!
Q So each writer doesn’t determine the way the episode goes? I always thought the book was the major resource. Interesting.
A Book’s the source. Some things change and all the writers “pitch” ideas for changes. This one wasn’t my idea, but I loved it.
Making that stream run fast was a feat of engineering! #dunbonnet pic.twitter.com/cuyMsnXRCt

(fan) Looks like Fergus’ impetuous nature cost him a hand. Why did he provoke them?
Anne: Teenage boys are dopes.
Q Where did you find the bagpipe player? Is he local?
A We shot this bit in Glasgow, so.. yes he was local!
Q Why did Jamie say keeping his eyes open (ed note, I think she meant closed) while kissing was “something I always do”?
A I think he was imagining Claire and didn’t want Mary to feel bad.
Q Also wasn’t it a tie-in to Claire closing her eyes as well?
A Yes, both.
