Doctor Who – Twice Upon A Time Blu-ray Review

By: Tom Gardiner February 24, 2018
TV Reviews blu ray, doctor who, DVD, Twice Upon A Time

Fellow Whovians, I hold in my hands an historic piece of merchandise. I am, of course, referring to the Blu-ray of the Doctor Who – Twice Upon A Time Christmas Special. It’s historic for at least a couple of reasons: It’s Peter Capaldi’s last episode as the Doctor, and the biggie is Jodie Whittaker appearing as the first female Doctor. And it’s also great fun, with 12 meeting his first incarnation as they’re both fighting against impending regenerations. It’s kind of funny when we see the moment 12 realizes he has to convince his earlier self to regenerate or he’ll never exist! This was just pure joy while also being groundbreaking and historic.

Freshly unwrapped, I popped the disc into my Blu-ray player and enjoyed one of the best Christmas Specials I can remember. The video is so crystal clear when played from Blu-ray. The sound quality a disc produces always blows me away and this is no exception. This is far better looking, and sounding, than when it was broadcast. I immediately knew I had made the right decision in getting this disc.

There aren’t a lot of extras included. You’ve basically got the episode itself with a choice of subtitles and one extra feature. But that extra feature is fun and almost worth the purchase price alone. It’s a mini making-of video that takes us behind the scenes to see how the episode was made. Running a little under 25 minutes, the extra just flies by and is nearly as fun to watch as the actual episode. Most importantly, the focus here is on a quality experience and in that regard BBC excels. The clarity of both picture and sound really wowed me and I watched the episode twice in 24 hours just because it’s so beautiful.

In case you weren’t already aware, you can buy this right now. For more details, I’ve included relevant snippets of the BBC press release for you and links to Doctor Who resources online.

Twice Upon A Time – the final episode of Peter Capaldi’s tenure as the Time Lord, which found record-setting success with its Christmas Day airing on BBC AMERICA – sees the Doctor come face to face with…the Doctor! The epic conclusion to the Twelfth Doctor era features the return of Pearl Mackie as well as special guests Mark Gatiss (Sherlock) and David Bradley (Game of Thrones, the Harry Potter movies), and culminates in a historic regeneration that introduces the Thirteenth Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch). Newcomers have the perfect opportunity to catch the new Doctor’s adventures from the very start, while fans of the Classic series will be delighted by the return of the First Doctor (Bradley, who previously played the very first actor to take on the role of the iconic Time Lord in 2013’s An Adventure in Space and Time). Bonus content on this Blu-ray and DVD release includes Doctor Who Extra.
