As much as I’ve loved the Harry Potter series – all the books, all the films – I have to say that the Fantastic Beasts offshoot holds a completely different, and equally as large, place in my heart. It’s more adult without being “adult,” and has the potential for being just as rich and developed. And now, I can’t wait until November for the next installment to come out. Yesterday, we were treated to the first trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and I’m SO excited!
Starting with the familiar spires of Hogwarts, and students hanging out of windows to see the visitors, the trailer quickly takes us into the realm of not-quite familiar. I think we all got a hint in the first movie that Newt Scamander was more than he seemed, more than just an animal-loving, mild-mannered wizard. And here he is, working covertly for a quite dashing, young Dumbledore! Jude Law has that same twinkle in his eye, and while I think it may be tough to reconcile the long-bearded, pointy-hat wearing Dumbledore we know and love with this handsome, tailored young professor, I’m willing to give it a try.

I’m not quite as convinced about Johnny Depp as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, formerly Dumbledore’s best friend. Having such a well-recognized, chameleon actor in this role could be a negative – but as we haven’t seen anything except a quick shot of him in the back of a car, in custody, we won’t know yet! I do know that I’ll miss Colin Farrell – he was one of my favorite things about the first FB film.
Newt’s new Makuza – and no-maj – friends are back. Tina and Queenie Goldstein, and the baker Jacob Kowalsky (does he remember anything?) are back. And we get an earlier generation from the baddie Lestrange family!

The scene above is my favorite moment of the trailer, where Newt and his brother blast the ground beneath them – something about that scene is very exciting!
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald comes out November 16.
