Everyone who’s met Cas Anvar will tell you the same thing – he’s a really nice guy. He’s always been responsive to fan reaction on social media and is fun to chat with. While we were at SDCC we were invited to do an exclusive interview with The Expanse star. Naturally, we jumped at it.
In this interview we cover a number of topics surrounding the wild ride The Expanse has undergone lately. We talk about the successful social media campaign of which he was the leader/man on the inside. Our convesation turns to the finale and the potential it brings to season four and beyond. We also discuss how the show, no longer bound by network TV constraints, could change on Amazon Video. And those changes could be pretty big.
Amazon has deep pockets, so The Expanse could potentially get a bigger budget. That sure wouldn’t hurt now that there are 1,500 habitable systems to explore. The VFX guys are going to be working extra-overtime building new worlds. A streaming service like Amazon Video will definitely open the floodgates to let Chrisjen Avasarala swear where no one has sworn before. No more US TV muting or replacing of words when we know nobody ever says, “Forget you!”
Then there’s nudity. The Expanse has never been a show to be gratuitous about nudity, but it’s never been shy, either. They’ve had to walk a tightrope between “tame” and “too much skin” to satisfy network censors. That’s no longer a problem should the story head in a clothing-optional direction. I floated the idea of an all-nude episode, but Cas, ever the wise man, pointed out something I hadn’t thought of. He noted that most people probably wouldn’t want to see naughty bits dangling about in zero-g. I’ve been on the internet long enough to respectfully disagree, but the wire work alone would be … interesting.
The word “chafe” comes to mind.
And the story of The Expanse‘s evolution wouldn’t be complete without a nod to Syfy. Without the network giving the show a home for the past three seasons, we wouldn’t have a show to save. So, no matter how you feel about them, we can’t deny the good that was done when they greenlit the show.
While we likely won’t see the fourth season for quite some time, the love for The Expanse continues online. That constant outpouring of support by the online community was a big reason why Amazon gave the show new life. So, to everyone out there supporting The Expanse – THANK YOU!
Now, please enjoy the video interview and try not to be too bothered by my face being (halfway) on-screen. Man, I blink a lot …
The Expanse season 4 will be shown on Amazon Prime Video, time TBD
