Usually when the Doctor regenerates, her/his “companion(s)” stay on for a while; I suppose it’s done to maintain continuity. The same is true when a companion leaves; the same incarnation of the Doctor remains and eventually finds another.
But this ain’t your grandfather’s Doctor! Well, okay, it is, but this is a franchise that keeps up with the times. (Pun totally intended)
As you already know, everything’s changed for this series/season of Doctor Who. New Doctor, new companions that are now referred to as “friends”, which sounds much better, & I suppose a new-ish TARDIS. (That last one we’ve yet to see, but I can’t wait.)
Keeping up with this much change can sometimes be taxing, but it’s so worth it if you go all in. This time ’round we’ve got not 1, not 2, but 3 friends in the mix. (Should’ve been 4. Poor Nan.) Heck, they’ve basically got themselves a Scooby Gang traipsing about in time and space. And I love it.
The premiere episode did a good job of fleshing out a new Doctor and three new friends in a single hour. But if you’re like me you want to know more, and know it now. BBC America understands and has released a video that further familiarizes us with the friends we already love.
Take five little minutes and watch this video. It’s a good introduction to the friends and how they’re connected to one another. Maybe they’ll become your new best friends, too!
