Live-Action ‘My Hero Academia’ Movie in the Works at Legendary

Legendary announced this past week that a Live-Action adaptation of the popular manga and anime series My Hero Academia was in the works.

The franchise created by Kohei Horikoshi, has more than 17 million copies in circulation currently. The franchise popularity grew massively internationally with the anime of the same name which has aired 3 seasons already. Season 4 is set to air next year. In 2017 the series was the winner of the Sugoi Japan Award for best manga.

My Hero Academia is set in a world where 80 percent of the population manifested superpowers called “Quirks” at age four. Heroes and villains battling it out everywhere! Being a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? You would study at The Hero Academy of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless?

Toho will distribute the film in Japan with Ryosuke Yoritomi in charge on behalf of Shueisha. Legendary will bring in Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter  to helm the project. It was inevitable that a series as popular as My Hero Academia would get the live action treatment, considering hollywoods recent obsession with such adaptations. The real question is do fans want one?

This is the first time the series is getting the live-action treatment but it is not the first film. The first film for the series, Two Heroes, just finished its US box office run and set records among animated films. Want to catch up on My Hero Academia? You can head over to Funimation.com to watch the first 3 seasons. Or you can also catch up with the manga by heading over to RightStuf or Amazon to pickup your copy of the series.
