Star Trek: ‘Lower Decks’ An Animated Star Trek Offering in the Offing – Preview

The door that “Star Trek: Discovery” kicked open is widening a little more with the announcement that a new animated Star Trek offering is on its way. Through the CBS All Access portal will now come “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” a 30-minute adult animated comedy from the mind of Rick and Morty head writer and executive producer, Mike McMahan. Lower Decks will take a humorous look at the support crew that makes a lesser star ship operate.

“Star Trek: Lower Decks” is CBS All Access’ first original animated series and the first project to be produced by CBS Eye Animation Productions, a recently-created animation entity through CBS Television Studios.

It turns out that McMahan is a life-long Star Trek fan and along with support from CBS and other entities, will now turn his eye towards this animated Star Trek offering. “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” will join the CBS All Access roster that includes “Star Trek: Discovery” which will return for its second season in January, as well as “Star Trek: Short Treks,” a series of four short stores tied to the Discovery series, as well as tying into the Star Trek universe as a whole.

There’s also the recently announced Star Trek show that will bring Patrick Stewart back to his role as Jean Luc Picard, which is under development. For those who can remember back, there was another animated Star Trek show more than 40 years ago — 1973’s Star Trek: The Animated Series. The road to creating a Star Trek-centric vibe through CBS All Access would appear to be well on its way.
