“The Wheel of Time” Adaptation Ordered by Amazon Studios

By: Michelle Harvey

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.” – Robert Jordan

Let it never be forgotten that on October 2nd, 2018 Amazon Studios made my entire year by officially ordering a television series based upon the fantasy epic Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Let me tell you, that I have been waiting for this day for what feels like a lifetime! My favorite book series is finally being turned into a television epic. So I have been jumping around my house all day because of it! The project has been in the works over at Amazon for around a year now, but today the series is official. Though the series is still in the early stages of development, it will be coming to life thanks to Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures TV.

Rafe Judkins (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Chuck) has been named show runner & executive producer, and thanks to his active and engaging presence on social media (Twitter in particular) I feel confident that this beloved story is in great hands. Rafe is a fan of the series too and recently embarked upon a re-read which is no small task. For those unfamiliar, The Wheel of Time is a huge sprawling fantasy epic, I’m talking 14 books and a prequel with the entirety of the series being roughly 4 and a half million words of amazing. The series sold over 90 million copies worldwide and took 23 years to complete overall, so trust me when I say that this fan base are some of the most dedicated and passionate individuals I’ve ever come across.

“In Rafe Judkins, we’ve found a brilliant visionary that is a true fan of the books and ready to bring Robert Jordan’s world to life.” – Chris Parnell, Sony Pictures Television Co-President

Like most book series, the fan base is very protective of this story and is often quite leery of any type of adaptation. Rafe has been so communicative with fans, sharing his love and passion for the series, and engaging on a regular basis with the fan base during his #WoTWednesday tweets that I can’t help but to feel connected to him as a fellow fan and trust that this brilliant story is also in brilliant hands. Alongside Rafe are Rick Selvage & Larry Mondragon of Red Eagle Entertainment, Ted Field & Mike Weber of Radar Pictures, and Darren Lemke as executive producers. Harriet McDougal (the late Robert Jordan’s wife) is a consulting producer on the project, giving me even more confidence that Rafe and Amazon are going to completely blow me away with this series.

“For so many people, including me, this book series has served as a world to escape to, to lose yourself in, to devour and inhabit completely. And I couldn’t be more honored to be the one finally bringing that world to life on screen, for old fans to lose themselves in all over again and new fans to discover for the very first time.” – Rafe Judkins
