Dark Horse All-Stars

Saturday of SDCC is packed full of some amazing panels, but my go-to is, and will always be, Dark Horse! Today the company brought out their All Stars to talk all about comic books. It was a great panel. Moderated by PR Specialist Anthony Mauro the panelist included Needi Okorafor, Gerard Way, and Matt Kindt.

They talk about a lot, including how their comics came to life and what the medium means to them. Eisner Winner, Nnedi Okorafor, talks about where her comic LaGuardia came from and the story was really eye-opening. She talks about some of her life experience as well and how she brought that to the story. Gerard Way talks about where the inspiration for Umbrella Academy came from and how much his experience being in the band brought to the table. Matt Kindt talks about how his inspiration for Bang came from the old crime dramas and how much he loves that gritty side of them.

Each of them also talk about why they chose comics for the outlet for their stories. Doing whatever they wanted in the medium was the popular answer. Comic books have no constraints or budget so they can make these larger than life characters. My absolute favorite moment was Gerard saying “everyone has to promise not to make fun of my pajama pants” as he turned to grab something off of his shelf that ties in to how he got in to comic books (pictured below).

I highly encourage all of you to go read these writers books. LaGuardia, Bang, and The Umbrella Academy are all fantastic reads that everyone should pick up!
