Saw splitting news and new characters await for Batwoman’s Rule #1 Episode 9 Review

Batwoman continues to deliver the on the edge of your seat moments. We are well into the season with episode 9, titled Rule #1; and the story just keeps getting better. This week introduced us to two new characters and teased the return of one vital former member of the Bat Team delivering perhaps the biggest news to the Arrowverse so far this season.

We started things off on a sad note. The funeral for Kate Kane. It was a small event. Just those closest to her were in attendance. Tears where cried and dirt was dropped as the said their goodbyes. But Jacob Kane just wasn’t certain that the news of his daughter’s death was the truth. Julia Pennyworth was revealed to have been secretly searching for information for months and in last weeks episode revealed that bones matching Kate’s DNA were found. Meaning that Kate was dead. It’s a good thing that Jacob Kane decided to not take that news to heart and wants to continue the search for his daughter. He might just get what he wants or maybe someone he doesn’t want.

It is when Julie is chasing down some leads that things start to take a turn. That person remembers speaking with her a while back but Julia doesn’t remember talking to them? How can that be? It would seem that her mind has had some memories erased. That culprit is none other than Enigma. As you recall she did the same thing to Alice and Ocean. There was something that Julie wasn’t meant to know. Perhaps she came too close to the truth? Well this episode reveals what that truth is a little later on.

Enter Jordan Moore, played by Keeyla King, and our first new character of the episode. She is Gotham’s new do-gooder striving to make Gotham better. We soon learn that she is none other than the younger sister of Sophie Moore. Jordan has gotten herself into quite a hot mess. I’d definitely say that witnessing the killing of Gotham’s Commissioner would be plenty to get you hunted down for right? Wrong place, wrong time Jordan! She may have saw too much but it wasn’t enough details to give the Crow’s what they needed to get any good leads. However, she did reveal one tiny key detail that unlocked something in Batwoman’s mind that would help her with the matter at hand.

That little detail led Batwoman to her former love, Angelique Martin. She just can’t seem to stay out of trouble can she? That key detail from Jordan was about Angelique’s bracelet that is in the form of a key that she was wearing during the shooting. Ah, foiled by jewelry of all things! It’s those little details that catch up with you. Angelique did have her moment this week when she decided to take the wrap for the shooting instead of facing the wrath of who she was working for. Tough decision but I’m sure she would rather not have a certain bartender friend of hers killed.

The person Angelique was working for is our newest villian, Black Mask, aka Roman Sinos. Let me tell you, this guy is gruesome with his ways of dealing with people. Removing faces off his victims seems to be his hobby. It definitely wasn’t lost on us that this is NOT someone to mess with. We were shown exactly why when one of his goons failed to do his job properly. In fact, Batwoman found herself with a front row seat to watch how Black Mask dishes out punishments as she lay chained next to that poor guy. She had the unfortunate experience of watching him get cut in half by a huge saw. She was next to experience that of course, and that saw was pretty darn close to the cutting position when Sophie slapped the stop button. Fortunately for Batwoman her team sent in reinforcements by way of Sophie when her coms were taken down. Sophie to the Bat rescue!

Black Mask was a key character in this episode. It was established that he was the one that played a role in having Kate’s plane taken down. Yeah that’s some huge news but I have bigger to tell you. Now that I’ve mentioned Kate Kane, she is our other new character this week. No, it is NOT Ruby Rose returning as Kate but a brand new face joining the Arrowverse fold by way of Wallis Day. Many may remember her from her time on the Syfy Series Krypton. This is perhaps the biggest news for the Arrowverse this season! Fans have expressed that they wanted Kate to return and they have gotten their wish, but maybe not exactly in the way that they wanted. Although Ruby Rose has expressed that she would be happy to return to the series, details are not known as to why there was a complete recast. But, if you watched Krypton then you will know that Wallis Day is as badass as they come and should play the part very well. Welcome to the Arrowverse Wallis Day!
