Fans of the series Blue Exorcist were excited this week to find out that the series was returning for a new season. The series first season aired 25 episodes plus an OVA finished in 2011 in Japan, 2013 in the US. It had a second season green lite after nearly 3 years in 2017.
The manga which is on its 28th volume is still going. The popularity in Japan and worldwide has lead to the anime’s continuation. According to the announcement, we don’t yet know when the new season will air. This new anime is expected to follow the Kyoto Saga events of season 2, which were canon to the manga, and cover the Illuminati Saga.
Netflix has the entire second season available in English for binge watching. This 5 year time gap between season 2 and 3 is the longest yet for the series but it doesn’t seem to be stopping the studio from producing more content around the popular manga series.
I highly recommend you binge watch this and get ready for season 3. If you have Netflix you can binge through the English dub of season 2 now. If not you can also binge through subbed or dubbed on Crunchyroll.com.
Aniplex of America released the series on Blu-Ray and DVD making it a rather expensive series to own, but streaming it is the best option to get you caught up. I plan on buying the manga and seeing where the story goes. Will A-1 Pictures will be coming back to produce the anime? The Jump Festa event didn’t provide further details but these original cast members did take to the stage during the announcement:
- Nobuhiko Okamoto as Rin Okumura
- Jun Fukuyama as Yukio Okumura
- Kana Hanazawa as Shiemi Moriyama
- Eri Kitamura as Izumo Kamiki
Given the popularity of the series Aniplex is expected to retain its license and dub the new season some time later. Don’t know about the series? Here is a synopsis:
Determined to throw off the curse of being Satan’s illegitimate son, Rin enters the True Cross Academy to become an exorcist, just like his mentor.
