Last week, we had the opportunity to preview the first teaser for the third Avatar film, ahead of Fantastic Four: The First Steps. Audiences got their first look at the teaser in front of the Marvel film starting Friday. After a weekend of leaks dropping online, the studio has released the full official teaser for your viewing.

Before my thoughts, check out the teaser below.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third film of the franchise, and comes to us much sooner than the 13-year gap between the first and second films. Fire and Ash was filmed together with the second film, The Way of Water, for a variety of reasons. But one of the biggest ones was the younger cast who was brought into the story with The Way Of Water, and wanting to have them grow into the roles. Spider, Lo’ak, Tuktirey, Kiri, and Neteyam were cast many years before the second film was released.

When we previewed the teaser in 3D it became clear that the third in an expected 5 film franchise was hitting a key turning point in the story for our characters. While it seems that Jake and Neytiri have managed to get off without much heartbreak, the ending the second film proved that not to be the case. The broader implications of Quatrich’s return, Jake’s fight against the RDA and Spider’s actions in the final battle of the previous film are teased in this preview.

Cameron has continued to push the boundaries of filmmaking technology with each film. There are a few films where seeing them in the theater is the only way to truly immerse yourself in the experience, and the Avatar franchise is one of those. Many feel the story plot has been done before or is too simple. I would disagree. Certainly, a rewatch of the first and second films is warranted ahead of seeing this one in December of this year. The next generation are the future of the story, and what that means for the adults who have many mistakes and regrets, and how their children will pay for those actions, is something we have to wait until December to find out.
