Crunchyroll has been on a run of new series that breaks the traditional mould for them. In yet another WEBTOON conversion, The God Of High School just launched on Crunchyroll. The series is based on “The God of High School” comic created by Yongje Park and published by WEBTOON. Animation for “The God of High School” is produced by MAPPA, the same studio which is taking over the final season of Attack On Titan.
So before we jump into our thoughts after the first episode, let’s refresh your memory on the series and its leading 3 characters.
Series Synopsis
“God of High School” is an all-styles martial arts tournament for high schoolers from all over Korea. Jin Mori, who lives on his own after parting ways with his grandfather Taejin at a young age, is on his way to the preliminary for his region when he ends up chasing a snatcher. In the midst of his pursuit, he meets Han Daewi and Yoo Mira, two other high schoolers on their way to participate in the preliminary. The only thing on the line is your pride! The only thing you can trust is your fists! Choose any wish, and it will be granted! Such is the power of God! So begins the battle royal featuring the most powerful contenders from all over…
The Characters
- Jin Mori – A sixteen-year-old whose renewal taekwondo, which he learned from his grandfather, makes him undefeatable. Nothing is more important to him than being the best fighter of all, and his current record out of 299 fights is 297 wins and 2 draws. He decides to participate in the God of High School tournament, an interdisciplinary martial arts competition, after suffering the first loss of his life against Judge R, one of the tournament’s judges.
- Han Daewi – One of the “Mad Cows,” a duo that once controlled the entire Gangnam area. He’s been working part-time jobs to pay the medical bills for his partner in the duo Woo Seung-Tae, who fell ill with an incurable disease, but the part-time work available to high schoolers is barely enough to cover the daily medical bills and won’t cover a cure. He joins GOH after being told that he can save his friend if he wins.
- Yoo Mira – The 25th Master of the Moon Light Sword Style. She pretends to be a fragile high schooler, but she has been training since she was a child and has become a skilled sword player. She prefers guys who are tough and strong, because she’s been told that she needs to marry a man strong enough to help her resurrect her family’s sword style. For that reason, she’s participating in GOH.
Our Thoughts
The story opens as he is racing to make it to the first day of the prelims for the God Of High School tournament. He runs into a thief and 2 others who are also going to be fighting. Jin, Han, and Yoo may end up being a powerful trio of fighters before long. MAPPA does a great job of providing some intense chase scenes and effects as the 3 chases down the would-be thief.
I will admit, one episode isn’t a lot to go on for a full-on thumbs up on a series. However, there is enough there that I want to learn a bit more about our leads and the world of The God Of High School. If martial arts style anime is a thing you enjoy, this is certainly worth checking out. You can catch episode one of The God of High School over at Crunchyroll Exclusively.
